Peet's Coffee on BART

BARTBatman's picture

So, Peet's is coming to BART, as was discussed briefly in the "Lady don't leave your coffee on the floor" topic a little while back. Check out the janky coverage: http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/local&id=5789513.

Ok, so I can understand why people might be upset about this. The writer of the news story certainly doesn't try to hide the fact that they don't think it's a great idea. I love the fact that the "man on the street" finds somebody who says they don't like the idea because "BART is already expensive as it is - to add coffee to my daily morning commute is going to be too expensive," like they somehow HAVE to buy Peet's cofffee once it's in the station.

Personally, I love this idea. I'm a huge coffee guy and Peet's is my favorite, by far. I almost can't drink anything else. I take a travel mug or even a paper cup on BART all the time, and I've never had any issues. I'd like to hear from law enforcement-types about what the general policy is. I know that it's "No food or drink on BART" officially, but I've never seen anyone cited for this and coffee almost seems like water; for some, it's definitely as essential.

If I were ever given a ticket for having a cup of coffee on BART, I would be very surprised. Has anyone ever been cited for coffee? Who agrees with me and thinks this is quite possibly the best decision BART has ever made? Who disagrees, and why?

Also, does anybody know what these Peet's stations are going to look like? Are they actually going to be inside the station, like, next to the fare gates (similar to newspaper counters)?

Peet's in San Bruno. C'mon

Peet's in San Bruno. C'mon Peet!! San Bruno needs you. There are two concession stands open and no one is leasing them right now. Are you hearing me Peet? Your coffee is so much better than that white cup with the green circle on it.

You do know that at the mall

You do know that at the mall right next to that station there is a starbucks in the foot court just as you walk in, I know it's not peet's but it is a choice.

I have the best of both worlds, I have sb at the san bruno station and peet's at the airport.

It would be nice if the concessions were being used at that station. They are great spots, right next to Bart, the bus stops and the local PD, A lot of money to be made at those spots.

Whoa. Sorry it took me so

Whoa. Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Because I sure do have a lot to say about this subject.

I'm kinda irritated for a few reasons that this is going forward.

First of all, this will only further encourage eating and drinking in the paid areas of the BART system. It's a hassle for patrons to buy their coffee somewhere else and cart it all the way to BART without spilling it on the bus, on MUNI, in their car, etc. Having a Peet's location in the station will make it so much easier for them to purchase something, and in today's on-the-go world they will want to save time and consume it on BART and not in the free area where it should be consumed. Violation of Penal Code.

Second of all, those that do consume their coffee and food in the stations and on the trains will be dirtying them up, even unknowingly. A few crumbs here and there can really add up. We'll also undoubtedly see an increase in the trash left in the stations and on trains. That means more work for an already thinly-stretched System Service team.

Thirdly, as mentioned in the article, local or independent coffee shops will be adversely effected.

Sounds like a Win-Win-Lose-Lose-Lose situation to me.

I'm not sure about this one.

I'm not sure about this one. I was saying the same thing when the little place opened up right outside the Concord North station, I can't say that the coffee stand has really added any more trash at the station, in fact there is little to no change in the condition of the station from what I can tell.

I hope that the contract

I hope that the contract with the coffee shop has wording to make them responsible for keeping the station clean(er).
