lighting in the newer trains and one smelly dude

boopiejones's picture

i typically ride in the "old style" trains as they seem to be the ones that pull up to my usual door entrance. the other day, i ended up in a "new style" train (the ones with T.O. cubbies on both ends). the reason i ended up in a new style train is as follows:

i get on my usual old style train/car in the evening at macarthur. immediately upon entering i get the strongest whiff of urine, puke, feces and who knows what else that i have ever experienced. i sit down, hoping the smell will go away or i'll get used to it (stupid idea). some others get up and move. as we are approaching embarcadero, i decide i better move to the next car while there are still seats available (this is the first time i have ever moved because of a smelly or loud or whatever person). as i make my way to the between-car doors, i find the root of the smell - sleeping in the hobo juice seats is one NASTY looking transient.

anyway, the real reason for my post is that when i got in the new train the lighting was noticably dimmer. looking at the ceiling, it looked like all the lights were turned on, so i am not sure if there are less lights, or they are a smaller wattage, or what. the only thing that seemed different on the two trains was that the brighter one was the "old style." are the new trains really darker? to me, the darker train felt a lot more dreary and less inviting.

I don't think there are any

I don't think there are any cars with TO cubbies on both ends, but the C1 cars are definitely dimmer than their A and B car counterparts. They also seem to be much grimier and just more dreary looking inside. These seem to be Bart's neglected cars and they can be identified by a 3 digit number. Bart occasionally replaces the seats, but the depressing atmosphere stays the same.

However, it the train seemed "new," it may have been a C2 car which are usually not too bad lighting wise, although still not as bright as the A and B cars. These are the cars that Bart is currently retrofitting with hard floors. These are the cars labeled 25XX.

It seems that as Bart retrofits and acquires its' cars, it makes them brighter each time...making it more visible to see the head grease and hobo juice on the seats.
