Ok you guys....I really am starting to hate spare the air days! If you remember how bad BART stunk and all the free loaders showed up on BART, I'm going to avoid this one.
Not sure what you guys think but spare the air days suck!

I know that BART and the ferries don't want round trip all day free trips but I'm not sure how MTC and BAAQMD are going to resolve that issue. Spare the Air was a nightmare for them.

Public transit is for the public; just about everyone in the Bay Area is paying for it. If the problem is with the number of riders, then increase the number of trains. If the problem is with the behavior of the of riders, then have BART police around to actually enforce the rules. The answer is not to restrict the system and, in effect, punish those who use it appropriately, but to address the real problem.

Raising prices does address real problems.. lower the price and you end up with homeless and troublemakers creating more cost to BART.

This is about as short-sighted as BART's apparent approach to maintaining order. Due to the absence of a BART police presence that will actually enforce rules the low-lifes just see how much they can get away with. They see this lack just as well as those who follow the rules. Raising prices would not seem to have much effect on those who do not follw the rules since they are probably more likely to evade fares which is, again, an enforcement problem.
Yes, spare the air days are worse, but mainly because the low-lifes have learned that they are not likely to get caught when what they should have learned is that if they misbehave then there is a good chance they will get caught. And, you don't need a BART police officer on every car, you just need enough officers to show that they really do exist and that they will enforce the rules. People will eventually get the message just as they get another message when they hardly ever see a BART police officer and, less often, see them enforce the rules. Yes, to some extent it is the way people are, but even more it's the way they are allowed to be. Raising fares mainly punishes those who follow the rules and in the long run accomplishes little in the way of establishing a safer BART environment.

I hate spare the air day.
I hate spare the air day. Young thugs ride the train for free to commit crime in the more affluent areas. It's a chance to leave the ghetto and arrive at your doorstep. These freeloaders just take up more space on the train with really nowhere to go. Crime and vandalism doubles and overwork the understaffed Bart police. The parking lots are jammed. Bad idea. Solution. Bart will be free on the "spare the air day" for the real commuters up until 1PM so these free loaders will have to fork over a one way fare if they plan to do their vandalizing past 1PM. Believe me, as an Agent, I'm doing the commuters a favor by keeping the homeless and other undesirables off the train. You don't know how many times a day people ask for free rides. Would you want to sit next to a person without $1.40 to their name or someone who hasn't had a shower in weeks?

Thank you for realizing the we are understaffed. As an agent you deal with BART Police on a daily basis, and realize that we aren't just being lazy, unproductive, or any of that. Spare the Air days see a dramatic increase in arrests and citations for many crimes, ranging from theft and robbery to drug offenses.
You are right on the money in stating that many freeloaders will abuse the courtesy ride on BART. I'm glad the logical solution of free one-way was implemented. Hope it works.
I guess we'll see.

BART will allow free rides until 1pm. MUNI and buses will be free all day. Money is budgeted for four days this season.
BART, Caltrain, and the

If you want enforcement for free transit, then pony up the funds needed for more cops to be at every station on every train and all points in between. It's tiresome listening to the same one or two trailer park types who post here about how transit costs too much and how black people are ruining life for poor white people. Waaaahhhh.

"Pony up the funds"? I pay bloody $7 a day. I've seen a robbery (on spare the air day) and a stabbing on BART. I'm bringing fucking pepper spray on the next spare the air day...
I actually started riding
I actually started riding BART, again, because of one of the SPARE THE AIR day's a few years ago. And realized that changing up my commute style was something I should be doing more frequently.
I didn't mind the free day's so much because I'm not a dick.
But, with the new plan, "Free untill 1:00 pm", I get the SHAFT!!
You see, I carpool into the office in the morning (usually), and hop the train at the end of the day to get back to the hizzy.
So, as is usual, I get NOTHING, NADA, NICHTS, Z-I-P!!
I HATE SPARE THE AIR!!!!!
I NOW think that they should be cancelled.
Cancelled as in ELIMINATED!!
It's not because of the crowds, homeless, or "feral" ridership.
It's because I don't get anything.
