Backing into parking spots

Is this really necessary? Especially during the morning commute when there is a line of cars heading into the garage and suddenly Mr.Front-of-the-Line needs to do the 8 point turn to back into a spot? Do you really need to make such a speedy getaway later? It causes traffic jams and riders to miss trains--I just don't see the purpose and would love to add that onto the list of parking violations subject to tickets!

Yes. Unless there is a sign

Yes. Unless there is a sign saying not to, I never want to be in my car alone at night or even in the day and backing out of a space. I always back in, particularly if there is a wall or something behind me. Ever notice that cops never park head in?

I back into parking spaces

I back into parking spaces when convienent. But I think that blocking traffic is a bunch of bullshit. I have seen signs, not at BART, that say "Head In Only" but rarley.

I always thought that police backed in so that they may eagress quickly if need be. Also to be seen. A lot of times all it seems to takes is a cop flying his colors to quell the evil doers.

as a former valet, i like

as a former valet, i like backing into spaces but i never do it at bart because no matter how good you are at it it is slower than pulling in forward and is an inconvenience to others in a commute setting. not to mention dangerous as many people tailgate in the lots and your sudden stopping and backing up could result in an accident (not your fault, i know, but an accident none the less).

what i don't understand this: "I never want to be in my car alone at night or even in the day and backing out of a space." if you only said at night, then fine, i understand. but during the day? and what is the difference between backing in vs. backing out? either way you are going backwards in a car and i'd argue that backing in (going from a large space to a small space) takes longer than backing out (going from a small space to a large space). since you are going backwards for a longer duration (read: in a vulnerable position for a longer period of time), i would think you'd prefer to back OUT.

Coming home in the eveing to

Coming home in the eveing to my parking garage, I want to be able to get into my car and just leave and not have to back up, yada, yada, yada. A lot of people do that. I usually park against a wall. In the parking garage, some people take as long to park head in as otheres do to back in so holding up traffic is relataive. I've seen back up twice trying to park head in and hold up cars. Backing in is actually a lot easier and quicker/

Cops back into parking so they can see and presumbly for easy exiting. No cop is going to sit in a parking lot with his back to the whatever action is going in the area. That's just common sense. They sit and write reports or whatever and it puts them in a vulnerable position to have their back to a street or sidewalk.

Have you ever gone into a

Have you ever gone into a restaurant with a police officer? Even when off-duty they prefer to sit facing the door so they can see what's going on around them and be ready to act if necessary.

Same as getting into your car in the evening - minimal time with your back to the "action."

And to those who think waiting for someone to back into a parking spot will make them late for the train they want to catch: why are you cutting it so close and not leaving any time for unexpected delays?

Have you thought that just

Have you thought that just maybe the person doing the backing in is what is causing other riders to cut it too close and maybe miss a train and maybe be late? Over and over there seems to be an undue emphasis on the actual victims of this and other stupidity as somehow being at fault for not making allowances for the idiots that make life miserable. What are normal people supposed to do, leave an hour earlier just in case they come across a bunch of morons? Please get real.

backing in is NOT a lot

backing in is NOT a lot easier and quicker. into a parallel spot, yes. perpendicular (like those at bart) no. say you are trying to back into a perpendicular spot on the right side of your car. by the time you drive past the spot and turn left, a front first driver could have just turned right into the spot. in short, by the time you have your car in reverse, i could have my car completely parked.

Backing into a spot 'aint

Backing into a spot 'aint THAT fuckin' hard.

Jeez.......

I prefer to back in when it makes sense, ie. not hold up traffic, proper orientation of parking stall and enough width of the lane to back it in, in TWO moves.

There are just an awful lot of stupid, oblivious, no driving mofo's out there. You know the one's....
Forward...Back....Forward...Back....
Forward...Back....Forward...Back....
Forward...Back....Forward...Back....

Ready...Aim...
Forget about it!

i never said it was hard. i

i never said it was hard. i said it was not as easy or fast as pulling in forward. you cannot dispute either of those arguements.

remember earlier i mentioned that i was a former valet?

i personally find backing in easy, and like you jbap21, i will not do it if it means holding up others. it doesn't matter if the others are late for the train or just jonesn' for a starbucks, it is rude to make others wait unnecessarily.

is it ok to stop in the middle of the stairs to tie your shoe if there were others behind you? would you get up to the front of the line at mcdonalds and then be like "ummmmm....i'll take an...hmm...do i want a cheeseburger or a hamburger...ummmm...let me get a ch...no wait...make that...hmm..."???

yup, drop it.

We are on the same page. It

We are on the same page.
It is amazing how stupid peeople become in parking lots in general.

Especially BART lots.

What is it...Too many choices?
It's like watching people choosing a lottery ticket while the line is six deep at the 7-11.

Should I get the blue ones or the $2 ones. Big Spin maybe......
"Hey Mister... why don't you get the DUMB FUCKS!!!!"

Just 'lemme park!

Parking, newspapers, bikes,

Parking, newspapers, bikes, escalators... it all comes back to the lost art of common courtesy. There are days I can't even walk down the street without getting plowed over by someone who cares more about themselves and whatever they are doing than simple courtesy like looking where they are going and not cutting me off as I turn a corner. Don't even talk to me about the mall and baby strollers.

I don't expect anyone to get out of my way, so when I think of all the auto accidents I've had to avoid by slamming on my brakes in the grocery store lot because someone feels it's OK to drive 20 mph down the aisle to the through street, I get a little irritated.

But I'm mostly used to it now. It keeps me awake at least.

The trouble with backing

The trouble with backing into a space is that leaving forces you to drive in the wrong direction.

can you please explain that

can you please explain that one?

They may be talking about a

They may be talking about a lot or garage where the spaces are slanted one way or the other. I don't think you're supposed to back in if it's a one way aisle and the spaces are slanted

Then when you leave, you

Then when you leave, you hold up people while you are backing out while I just pull out. :)
