will there be lot of people travelling at that time or just few?
i am a girl, 20 yrs of age and i am travelling alone.

Nothing is ever completely
Nothing is ever completely safe so if you have lots of money and can take a cab, go for it.
If not, here's my advice:
First, stay down in the brightly lit station area near the agent's booth until just before your train is due, then go up to the platform.
You'll also be surprised at how many people are on the trains at that hour - you wouldn't be alone.
BUT, as a older female who often rides BART late at night, my best advice - which I first got from a BART cop - is to ride in the very first car, directly behind the train operator. And always act/walk as if you know what the f*** you are doing so you're not perceived as an easy prey victim. Don't have a purse hanging from a shoulder or visible iPod earbugs. Think smart and you should be fine.
Long-Term Rider is right -
Long-Term Rider is right - stay in well-lit areas, and if you feel the need, carry pepper spray or a stun gun. That way, god forbid, if you are attacked, you will be prepared. Don't count on BART Police - nothing against them but they're hardly known for their speedy response times.
If you have any concerns, walk to the front car or a car that has more people in it. ALWAYS avoid the last car. Late nights, they're probably filled with bums settling in for the night and can get quite smelly.
Wish you the best of luck.

There are some crazy drunks
There are some crazy drunks on the trains late at night so good luck! The trains always wreak of alcohol at that hour.
The comments above should be helpful.
That trip is far from safe
That trip is far from safe for a young unescorted woman. Take a cab, don't even consider bart at that hour.
I can't imagine what your
I can't imagine what your certainty is based on, but to call BART "far from safe" is absurd. Besides, you probably have never ridden in an East Bay taxi. You would have otherwise noticed that four out of five cab drivers here are rude, racist (no matter what their own race), sexist morons, and always driving some disgusting decrepit vehicle that should have been decommissioned fifteen years ago. They don't take credit cards (or issue receipts), which means you have to carry cash. And if you call a cab, there is at least 35% probability it won't even show up. How can anyone call this safe?
Good call, I didn't think
Good call, I didn't think about that when I said not to take bart. You make some very good points, I have ridden in many EB taxis so I should have considered the alternative. Of course, none of this makes bart any safer at that time of night in that part of the bay.
Looks like somebody got shot
Looks like somebody got shot at the Coliseum station last night (that is where you will catch Bart from airbart). Be careful!
Boy, you got that right
Boy, you got that right about the East Bay cab drivers plus they add additional people to your ride without even asking you. My company would pay for my cab fare home from BART but they are horrible, unreliable if you try to set up a regular meet, and just plain rude, not to mention their cars stink and are as dirty as the dirtiest BART train. If you take a cab too, have the exact change. Last time I took a cab from Pittsburg, the guy added three other fares, never had the meter on, etc., etc., and was just a weirdo.
don't be scared off by a few
don't be scared off by a few bitter people, BART is as safe or safer than any other mode of transit. anything can be dangerous. what if the cab driver takes a shine to you and decides to make a detour to some deserted area? what if the cab gets hit by a truck? i see the same young single women alone on the train all of the time. ride in the lead car and leave the rest to the train operators who will be looking out for you the whole way.
I am a 23 year old woman,
I am a 23 year old woman, and I used to ride Bart late at night once in a while when I had to work late in SF. Just be aware of your surroundings, especially going in and out of the stations. At that hour you never know who may have followed you off the train or may be hiding in a deserted parking lot.
the truth is it really can
the truth is it really can happen anywhere. Not necessarily on BART. This sort of thing happens anywhere and nowadays, they are getting bold to do it in plain daylight and in front of other people. It's sad...
Take the train! Regardless
Take the train! Regardless of the hour, day or night you will be able to get to and from without incident and chances are it is much more affordable than a taxi. Some other good information was already passed on...
You got that right about the
You got that right about the cabbies. You might end up with a nut.
I remember there was a woman who took a cab in the city after she had drinks at a bar not too long ago. She had to go to the East Bay and the cab driver killed her. I don't recall exactly why or why it had to come to that point, but I do remember he denied it for the longest time.
You're a 20 year old
You're a 20 year old woman/adult/young adult, not a girl. Treating and thinking of yourself as a girl will only paint yourself to be a victim. Get out of that mindset. Heads up. Look determined and know what you're doing. If you treat yourself like a girl, at 20, you'll be so treated.
Have a game plan. Yes, sit in the first car. Don't fall asleep and end up at Fremont after the trains have gone out of service. Be aware of your surroundings and keep that iPod out of your ears. Half the thefts are iPod users either because those white wires advertise their presence, or they're too engrossed in the music to be aware an attack is immenient.
Is this Fact or Hearsay? You
Is this Fact or Hearsay?
You say: "Half the thefts are iPod users..." How do you know HALF of thefts are iPods? Are you a BART employee (cop?) who knows such a thing to be true? Or is it something you might have heard and it's conjecture?
If it is fact, this is certainly not the kind of information BART is passing on to its riders to keep us as safe as possible and that pisses me off!
So if you know this to be true, where do these thefts most commonly take place?
On the trains?
On the platforms?
In the stations?
Outside the paid areas?
Are any stations/cities more suspectible?
An "attack"? What kinds of attacks have occured?
I have an iPod that I keep in an inner pocket and often wear a hoodie to conceal the white wires, so I'd appreciate knowing if it is putting me in real danger. I - and I assume every other iPod wearer reading this - would rather keep my listening device and myself safe than risk serious injury for the sake of some music.
So, thanks "Anonymous" if you can shed a little light on your vey scary statement.
I invested in pepper spray
I invested in pepper spray and a taser/stun gun! I asked a BART policeman about my devices and if I would get in trouble for having carrying them and he said, "NO, as long as it is used for self-defense purposes only" and get cerftied with your pepper spray and stun gun so it is REALLY legal and no one can say anything. My advice; ALL commuters should carry it since you never know when these brainless wonders will get on BART and wreak havoc with your safety and/or life.
Stun guns and pepper spray
Stun guns and pepper spray are great. but remember you will be VERY stressed if you ever get on a situation where you need it so make sure you are familiar with the device you are carrying, and if practical, practice with it.
Practice holding the stun gun, and if it can be disabled from going off pull the trigger a few times (but don't point it at anyone regardless unless you mean it). Be familiar with the safety system on the spray, practice holding down the safety latch and aiming the can (visualize the spray hitting the face and eyebrows). If you're really ambitious you can look for a can of inert (training) spray at a uniform store.
Oh, and don't bury it in the bottom of your bag. It's not useful if you can't find it in an emergency.
Anyone who wears earplugs on
Anyone who wears earplugs on public transit at any time of day is an idiot. Criminals look for easy marks. An easy mark is someone who is oblivious.
To the young woman: I'm a woman who has ridden BART alone late at night. Heed the advice about riding BART at night. Ride in the first car. Don't wear earplugs. Don't blindly yak on your cell phone. If you are on your cell, be aware of everything going on around you. Don't be afraid to assertively get up and move if some asshole sits near you and starts hassling you, and be SURE to tell the T/O if you have any problems on the train. Don't wear heels. Put on your "don't f**k with me" expression and keep it on until you are safe in your house.
How are you getting home from the Union City BART station? Is your car parked there? If so, have your car keys ready when you get off BART instead of fumbling around for them standing next to your car. If you are taking the bus from BART, know the bus schedule, know how much the bus is and have your fare ready when you get on. If you can arrange for a ride, have someone pick you up.
Plan B: What if your plane is late and arrives after BART stops running? How do you plan to get home?
Question for the general public: Are there black cars for hire at the Oakland airport? Are they better than regular taxis? Can you reserve one to pick you up? They are probably more expensive than taxis but might be a reasonable alternative.
Make absolutely sure you
Make absolutely sure you have the bus schedule down. Union City Transit stops fairly early. I think AC Transit probably stops early as well, because they have fairly minimal service in suburban areas.
