New National Effort Urges Congress to Take Action to Extend the $230 Pre-Tax Transit Limit

Just as with last year, Congress has again delayed any action on an extension to the $230 pre-tax transit limit that went into effect in early 2009. If Congress does not act in 2011, the transit limit will be reduced to $125 month on January 1, 2012, and any election amount over $125 should be deducted from a participant’s pay on an after-tax basis.
For the last several months, WageWorks and our transportation partners have again lobbied Congress to extend or make the $230 limit permanent. While we have made some good progress, Congress is not likely to act unless they hear directly from you and your participants.

With our transportation partners, we have created a new advocacy website called www.commuterbenefitsworkforus.com to give you and your participants an easy way to directly contact their Senators and Congressmen on this issue. To promote the site, we have created an HTML email that we encourage you to send to your participants. This email provides participants with information about the impending limit decrease and how it will affect their benefits and savings, and encourages them to visit www.commuterbenefitsworkforus.com and register their opinion with their Senators and or Congressmen.
In addition to sending the communication, we believe now may be a good time for you to prepare your staff and systems for the decrease, in the event Congress does not act before the end of the year.

It is important to note that the parking pre-tax limit is not at risk for reduction; instead, it will actually be increased to $240 from $230 for 2012.
