Parking Fine

PEOPLE OUT THERE SHOULD GO TO THEIR LOCAL BART STATION AT NIGHT AND PAINT OVER ALL THE STALL NUMBERS TO FIGHT THE SHITTY PARKING SYSTEM.

I use BART everyday of the week and even sometimes on the weekend. This morning I parked and as I walk up to the parking machine I forgot my stall number. This is the first time and I figured "oh well... If they fine me it will only be a few bucks." because I'll miss my train and be late for work if I run back to my vehicle.

I get back home after a long work day and hope that I didn't receive a fine. Sure enough I did. I flip it over to see that the fine is $25.00! Yes, it's chump change, but it still pisses me off that it's twenty five times the normal cost of parking!! TWENTY-FIVE TIMES!!!

That's rediculous!!! This whole parking system where you have to remember your stall number everyday as you walk to the station, then go to the parking machine and waste time typing in the stall number, before rushing upstairs to catch your train sucks.

PEOPLE OUT THERE SHOULD GO TO THEIR LOCAL BART STATION AT NIGHT AND PAINT OVER ALL THE STALL NUMBERS TO FIGHT THE SHITTY PARKING SYSTEM.

You break the law and then

You break the law and then are upset at the fine--grow up!

I admittedly forget the

I admittedly forget the stall number. If you would read my post it has to do with the system in place to pay for parking. It's not good.

It works in some places, for example: a college parking lot. It works here because there is not point in which if you forget you can't walk back to your car. Unfortunately, if you forget while on a BART train, you are outta luck.

If these parking units (that take your cash) were outside the station by the parked vehicles people would be less likely to forget their stall number. Even if they did they could simply walk back to the stall and retrieve the number since it would be near by. This works MUCH better than having to enter the station to pay for parking far, far away from your vehicle.

And even if someone still happens to forget - charge them a few bucks... NOT TWENTY-FIVE TIMES THE NORMAL AMOUNT.

Yes, I'm upset at the fine and I should be, but the main reason for making the post was to show how bad of a parking system BART has. Maybe if you weren't too busy trying to tell me to grow up over a valid problem, you'd notice there actually is a problem here. I am glad my bold suggestion did it's trick to get you to read the post though. :)

BART parking is for patrons

BART parking is for patrons only. The machines are inside the paid area of the stations to help make sure that the only people that can use them are actually riding the trains. Please explain how, in your proposal, the system would make sure people paying for parking were actually going to ride the train.

In addition, please explain how machines would be economically deployed at stations that have large parking lots, like Dublin/Pleasanton or Millbrae, among others. The machines supposedly cost $60k a year to run when you factor in cost to purchase, maintenance and such.

The idea itself isn't half bad, but think out some of the details. Also, in terms of your ticket, you may want to try contesting it and see what happens.

As for the fine, I think it's low. You should try getting a parking ticket in San Francisco.

No. The big problem here is

No. The big problem here is that many people, INCLUDING YOURSELF, refuse to take responsibility for your own actions and decisions. In order to make yourself feel better, you feel the need to place the blame on someone or something else because you have too much pride to suck it in and admit that you messed up.

You already admitted that you forgot your stall number and *YOU* decided to take the chance and get on your train anyway. This isn't the fault of BART management. Maybe you should allow yourself more time in the morning so you're not running a marathon to catch the train.

To counter your other suggestion, in reference to placing the parking machines outside the station, this is not done for a very specific reason that helps benefit YOU. BART parking lots are for BART patrons only. This allows the maximmum amount of stalls for strict use among BART passengers. The parking units are placed in the "paid" areas of the station because it makes it more difficult for "non-patron parkers" to pay for their stall.

P.S. If you get caught painting over numbers in the BART parking lots and the cost of the damage exceeds $400, you can expect to pay up to $10,000 in fines and spend time in the state prison. I imagine that $25 parking ticket is looking a little less threatening.

I didn't say forgetting the

I didn't say forgetting the stall number and going on the train was BART managements fault. I'm just saying it's a bad system. I usually get there really early, but that morning I was running late. How is admitting I forgot my number rufusing to take responsibility for my own actions? It's not. I just noticed that there's two problems here. 1) The cost of the parking fine. and 2) The system in which BART makes people pay for their parking stalls.

There was actually one good part about your post and that was about the "non-patron parkers". That didn't even cross my mind, but makes sense. There are still much better solutions out there... How about they add a sign for all stalls to show the parking number so you see it when you park instead of looking under your car?

Or how bout this: create a letter number system. It's much easier to remember "D8" than "2947".

These are only things I've thought of within a couple minutes of writing this post. I'm sure BART management can do better than that...

I'm not going to paint over the stall numbers.. I just said, "someone should" out of anger and frustration with the system. $25 is threatening at all... it's the fact that it's too much to pay for a horrible system.

I think I'll go to your

I think I'll go to your house and paint a big L on your car. That way, when you park you will see the L and think, "hey loser, don't forget your stall number."

I like your plan, but I think mine uses less paint.

A Tip for the future... Pay

A Tip for the future...

Pay the fee but enter in a number you think it might be.. The receipts are time and date stamped.. You have proof you paid, but you have the hastle of sending in a copy of it.

But at least your not stuck with a $25.00 fine for not even trying.. An Agent gave me that tip.

is this true about guessing

is this true about guessing what you think it is and be able to have the fee dropped?

I had this happen to me where I parked at Dublin and had a long walk to the station only to forget the number of the stall and I ended up walking all the way back which caused me to miss my train.

So what you are saying is if I at least pay the fee and enter the number I think it is, I have a good chance of getting a $25 fee dropped?

I used to take Bart (about a

I used to take Bart (about a year ago before they charged for parking) and there was a time when I forgot my stall number. I tried validating with a number that I guessed- I was only one number off! I still got a ticket, and had to pay $25.00. Seems like paying the $1.00 might not matter, but I could be wrong because things are different now.

Thanks this is a great tip!

Thanks this is a great tip!

Wow, you don't pay your

Wow, you don't pay your parking fee and advocate other illegal activity. No wonder you got a ticket. Sounds like a bit of time in the cooler wouldn't hurt either.

The entire idea of charging

The entire idea of charging for parking is ridiculous anyway. I understand that non-patrons may park illegally but why should a paying rider who makes a simple mistake have to pay $25.00???

Why not put a gate at the entrance of the lot and have the rider insert their BART ticket and deduct the fee automatically?

This would cut down on riders having to remember their stall numbers
This would cut down the non-patron parkers.
This could be done with maybe 2-3 machines at the entrances of the lot rather than have 5-10 machines in the station. This translates to less cost for BART.

LOVE YOUR IDEA ABOUT THE GATE

LOVE YOUR IDEA ABOUT THE GATE ENTRANCE, LIKE THE AIRPORT.. OR A REAL PERSON IN THE DAY. IF BART IS SO WORRIED ABOUT WHO'S PARKING IN THEIR PARKING LOTS..

i think you just answered the

i think you just answered the question without realizing it: "This could be done with maybe 2-3 machines at the entrances of the lot rather than have 5-10 machines in the station." time and safety. i can't speak for ALL stations, but the ones i frequent (walnut creek, lafayette) have parking lot entrances that are directly off a main road. assuming that people can insert a ticket into a machine as quickly from their car seat at they can while standing in the paid area (which they likely cannot), it will take three to five times as long for everyone to pay for parking as there are only "2-3 machines at the entrances of the lot rather than have 5-10 machines in the station." this is not only a time issue, but a safety issue. at walnut creek, you make a left off the freeway and then an immediate right into the parking lot. if you had to pay before entering, then traffic would back up onto the freeway and people would die.

what about people that don't have tickets? some people buy tickets at the station, but with your method, you can't park unless you already have a ticket...

i can't believe i just responded to a three year old post.

Wow, I guess I should turn

Wow, I guess I should turn myself in for forgetting a number and venting my frustrations on a site used (in part) to vent BART frustrations.

You're right... I'll turn myself in to the police tomorrow! Thanks for your informative post. I'm not sure what we'd do without you.

Honestly, I have done the

Honestly, I have done the same thing and you know what you do?....You suck it up and walk your ass back to to see what your number is. It's well worth the $25, trust me!
Paying a dollar a day is totally retarded, I know.. but this is the choice you've made.
A more valid complaint would be the serious lack of parking spots!
Remembering your # is a piece of cake..

I pay $165 per month so I

I pay $165 per month so I don't have to park in a BART lot so I have no sympathy for someone to lazy to walk back and check the number on a stall for a $1 parking fee. How often do those diapers of yours get changed?

I could forget my parking

I could forget my parking stall number tons of times and still pay less than you. And you are calling me lazy? lol! You get the reward for funniest post on this thread.

165/25=6.6 Does that sound

165/25=6.6

Does that sound like tons of times to you? You, sir, are sub-moronic.

"Tons of times" is a figure

"Tons of times" is a figure of speech.

So let me get this straight... I'm paying $50 a month (taking into consideration I might forget the stall number at least once a month), and you are paying $165 a month... Yet, you are calling me sub-moronic?

Hahahahahahhaha! You get funnier every post!

Agreed. The only problem was

Agreed. The only problem was I didn't know it was going to be a $25 problem... Punishment should fit the "crime" so 4 times the amount ($4) would be acceptable.

Ha. $4.00 is not nearly

Ha. $4.00 is not nearly enough.
$25.00 is on the low side of reasonable.

I'd be willing to bet that you'll be paying enough attention to doing it right next time.

Sometimes you just have to get the offenders attention- with a mule, a 2x4 between the eyes is sometimes necessary; with an automobile driver, a hit to the wallet is required.
df

Even a mule would have been

Even a mule would have been smart enough to remember a stall number and/or not too lazy to walk back to get the number. Why must people insist that the sytem cater to retards???

So you've never forgotten a

So you've never forgotten a number?

I don't think people are retarded forgetting a number when they are rushing to work since they happened to be late one day... It happens! Anyone with common sense knows that.

BART should cater to the riders and make life as easy as possible for them since, after all, they pay for the system.

How exactly is BART supposed

How exactly is BART supposed to know that you simply forgot your number? For all they know, you are just ditching your fee. I love how you think the whole world knows what's going in your head! Keep up the good work. Odds are you won't do this again... THAT'S why they make the fine $25. Smile and have a great day!!

How hard is it to write the

How hard is it to write the number down or get one of those cheap key chain recorders that record a few seconds of voice and record the number as you get out of your car. You screwed up. It's not BART's fault that you forgot your number and didn't have time to go back and look.

the machines are inside the

the machines are inside the stations because,it would be to easy for carpoolers to just put a dollar in the machine and not ride BART,
leaving no place to park for you THE BART RIDER.
I would think that not finding a parking space would upset you more than remembering a number.
you must really be one unhappy person if little things like this bother you,and cant figure out simple logic

Or like I do, use the back

Or like I do, use the back of an business card and write the # on it so I can punch it in when I get into the station. If I don't, I'll forget the # within 3 seconds. :)
