2.9 million to make riders more secure against terrorist attacks.
I myself would feel more secure, if BART would just enforce many of thier correct policies, rules and legal codes, such as no eatting, drinking, or smoking, how about all those people who do not even pay, my word, what is the world comming too!

Mayors Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom play key role in securing funding
Today, August 23, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office announced the Governor is granting BART $2.9 million to make riders more secure against terrorist attacks.
"Since 9/11 the federal government has been giving mass transit just a small fraction of the huge amounts of money it's been directing toward the airlines," BART Board Director James Fang said. "We're getting this money because Governor Schwarzenegger has taken a leadership role in making sure mass transit systems like BART are much more secure. We are truly appreciative to the Governor for this grant. BART will use the funds to further secure critical BART infrastructure, which millions of riders use every year."
For security reasons, BART isn't releasing specific details on the improvements.

bart management just doesn't
bart management just doesn't seem to get it: a police presence that enforces the basic rules is at the same time a good security measure and deterrent, not to mention just being basically good for all law-abiding and respectful bart patrons. people with no respect for others will simply take advantage of the lack of enforcement. maybe bart management has just been holding out for more money. it will be interesting to see what they do with these funds.
WORD.
WORD.
the neocons don't believe in
the neocons don't believe in public transportation, that's why they're loath to give any money to BART or any other public transit system. The airline execs pay for their campaigns, that's why they get the biggest handouts from uncle sam.
What an Idiot. Wrong forum
What an Idiot. Wrong forum for Liberal Crybabies, try Craigslist.
It's the truth, Republicans
It's the truth, Republicans hate public transit. They'll throw unlimited funds at airlines but they hate funding public transit. They practically killed Amtrak. Does anyone remember that right before 9-11, Bush was trying to figure how much money to throw at the airline industry because they were in a financial crisis? Then 9-11 happened and it was perfectly acceptable to throw all the money in the world at the airlines.
This isn't being a crybaby, it's the truth. It took the GOP over two years to put together a transportation bill and not before they plugged in more pork than any transportation bill ever had. In the meantime, transit had to hobble along receiving a dollop of transit funding each couple of months because the House GOP was trying to slash funding for transit. The GOP gives tax breaks to people for buying Hummers but doesn't want to give money to Amtrak.
There's plenty of money for airline security and practically none for public transit. How is that being a crybaby? I'll post the comparison next week that shows how much money is spent on the airlines and how little is spent on transit. It's shameful.
BART should do whatever it
BART should do whatever it can to secure more public funding so that it can actually be AFFORDABLE public transportation and keep fares from going sky-high. There are just some things that the government should subsidize and not expect to make money on because they serve a bigger purpose. If a basic purpose of BART was/is to actually get cars off the roads then the fares have to be low enough so that most people can and will regularly use BART and parking has to be provided since the supporting bus system is basically non-existent.
