"BART Limit Exceeded" I was trying to buy a BART ticked with my credit card this morning and the machine said "BART Limit Exceeded" and then cancelled the transaction. I tried looking it up online but I can't find any information about it... Anybody know what this means? |

i am not sure if this is still the case, but it used to also deny your card if you tried to use it more than once in the same day, regardless of the amount. so if you are making a round trip and for some reason only bought a one way ticket for the first leg, you were screwed if you didn't have cash to get back home.

This. I used to make my tickets exact change at the kiosks with credit instead of going to the exchange window. I think I was able to get two transactions out of one card per day. It seems consistent with your comment here, you can't buy more than $69 every two days or more than 2 transactions of any size in one day.

Some tool has stolen YOUR cc.
They go to bart and DRAIN your account for EVERYTHING it is worth buying bart tickets.
They THEN go outside the station and sell these tickets at 1/2 of face value...or less.
You get to deal with the mess and hassle of dealing with a cc company fraud outfit.
They get food,booze and or whatever they buy with the ill gotten gains.
Or you can put up with a small pain in the ass like being denied a bart ticket because they have had the issue before and this is the way bart chose to handle the issue rather than ignore it and let the patron be damned.(I know ..weird huh ....)

Bartarded if you're so angry that you can only use your cc two times at the ticket machines then get a Clipper card. You can use your credit card to autoload it. Much more convient than running to the ticket machine every time you ride BART.

I am trying to rack up small CC purcahses this month so I can get bonus rewards on my card. Just pissed that BART wont let me spend my money the way I want to on their stupid system.

There's another good reason
There's another good reason besides theft for BART to restrict the number of small credit card transactions: credit card companies charge a per transaction fee as well as a percentage of each transaction. On small transactions these fees can be a very substantial percentage of the ticket. While having a $10 minimum on credit card transactions would also work, BART's approach of limiting you to two transactions per day is more friendly to casual riders and people who are bumping against the limits on their credit cards.

Unless things have changed in the last few years, the agreement that vendors sign with the CC companies doesn't allow them to have a minimum charge or an extra fee. IIRC the closest a retailer could legally get to not getting robbed on small charges was to build an extra CC fee into their posted prices and then offer a cash discount.

From what I was told, the credit card transaction limits were put in place after BART discovered that pickpockets and thieves would high-tail it to a BART ticket machine to use stolen credit cards for tickets before the victims had a chance to contact the credit card company and report the theft. It seems like a pretty good scam, since the machine doesn't check your ID to make sure that the person using the card is legitimate, and the crook could turn a bunch of high-value tickets into quick cash.
