Evacuation Procedures

HeavySeas's picture

In the evacuation procedures the instructions for a tube emergency indicate that we are to cross over to adjacent tracks and wait for a rescue train. Will this rescue train be arriving on the same tracks we're waiting on? If so is there a designated waiting position? Basically I'm wondering how, in the event of an emergency evacuation in the tube, we avoid being run over by the train that's coming to rescue us?

The train on the opposite "rescue" track would be operating in manual mode. This was asked and answered about 2 months ago. Any kind of evacuation will bring train service to a grinding halt in the general vicinity.

Thanks. I'm guessing the train would be moving very slowly to allow for the operator to manually stop well in advance of the evacuated parties. Hopefully we have room to jump out of the way if the operator miscalculates.

HeavySeas,
Good question, the plan calls for ALL trains to stop or exit the tube. If there is smoke, the Power Support Specialist will vent the smoke away from the train and passengers. Then a "rescue train" with Fire Department/Police Department, Mechanics and other personel on board will be dispatched in Manual Mode from either West Oakland or Embarcadero. The train will only be going about 10mph or so. It will stop before it gets to you and the train operator will either open doors on the side of the train or open the "front doors" and extend a ramp for passengers to walk up. After checking around the tunnel, gallery and trackways, the T/O will proceed in manual mode to the next station. Expect to wait a while as the tube is umm.... 6 miles ? long.
