what do station agents do all day?

just wondering what their job is supposed to be exactly? sometimes i see them giving people directioms to points of interest, but most of the time it seems like they are just sitting there doing not much.
do they take out the trash or enforce passenger safety or system violations or anything?

It depends on what station
It depends on what station and what time of day. In general, they deal with bad tickets, answering questions, helping people use the machines, unsticking the ticket machines when they jam up, restocking the ticket machines with blank tickets, keeping an eye out for defacement of property, etc. They're also trained in evacuation procedures and have to open and close the stations early in the morning and late at night. There are ebbs and flows of busy periods and non-busy periods, based mostly on when trains arrive. Some stations, such as Powell St., are endlessly busy. In others, the crowds ebb and flow.
huh. i wonder if maybe they
huh. i wonder if maybe they could comebine some jobs to cut costs? maybe make station agents do light janitorial work or something? seems like most all the stations could use a good scrubbing these days.
If they are a woman, chances
If they are a woman, chances are that they have created a profile on various dating sites (always have "Transportation" listed as employment) and are logged in thru their iphones replying and chatting... lol
