The "No layoffs" promise was

The "No layoffs" promise was really what put the contract vote over the top in terms of the membership. But, frankly, I'm not surprised. What's really unfortunate is that many people who were ready to retire are now holding off because, if they're in the manager's union, they get severance pay if laid off. If they retired, there might not be a need for layoffs.

"Temporary" does not mean

"Temporary" does not mean "Permanent". Contract or no contract, temporary workers can be terminated anytime. This does not mean layoff. If any Permanent worker has been laid off, then i think the union should strongly take it up with the management.

The Union intends

The Union intends to.

Although they can be terminated at anytime, they are Union Workers with rights and benefits.
The Union needs to know in advance of termination so they can try and place these people into other positions (temporary or permanent) and monitor their separation so that they will be insured of getting their benefits that they have coming.

There is also something just inherently wrong about working somebody all day long and then at the end of the day, firing them. It is one thing to be fired for wrong doing, it is another matter to be just let go with no warning so you can find another job to feed your family.

Does a largeintity like BART not know from day to day the staffing they need? Knowing this outfit, they probably don't. Management certainly knows the way to Bangkok, Asia, Tokyo and every other city on the planet and where all the high priced watering holes in NYC are but they can't tell the lowest paid worker at BART that in two weeks they will be at the end of their employment so they can look for another job? It's far more than wrong. It's plain chickenshit!

It's not just about workers rights. It's also about human rights.

No there isn't.
That's how the real world works when you don't have Unions around making ridiculous demands. If the workers do not like it they are free to get a job somewhere else.

Every person who has ever

Every person who has ever been fired has been fired at the end of the day, by definition. That might happen at 3am or 11am or 5pm.
