Good idea for next spare the air day.....Forget the free fare, just run 10 car trains. I know 10 car trains are more expensive to run, but hey, you are collecting fare so it should even out. Bart conditions are so much better with 10 car trains. Also, if Bart would clean the trains during spare the air days that would be nice too. |

Unfortunately BART does'nt
Unfortunately BART does'nt have enough cars in it's fleet to run 10 car trains on all 5 lines. That would solve the overcrowding problems. But even a 10 car train at Embarcadero going to Pittsburg at 5:30 is packed like sardines. What can they do?

They used to always run 10 car trains. It would ease the crowding somewhat. This morning the trains were packed, and, like usual, there was a 8 car train.

I didn't realize they were short on trains, that is the first time I heard that.
Um, no they didn't use to
Um, no they didn't use to always run 10 car trains. The Concord line has always had 10 car trains. The Richmond to the City has some 10 car trains. Fremont to the City has 3 10 car trains rest 8 and 9's. Fremont to Richmond has never had 10 car trains. Trust me we don not have enough cars systemwide to make every car a 10 car train. There used to be 10 car trains on all lines during commute, but that was years ago before we had extensions to Pittsburg, the Dublin Line, & the Colma SFO line.
More Stations+More Patrons=More trains needed. With no extra cars to accomodate the new demands, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why not all the trains are 10 cars. Do the math.
The thing that infuriates me is during non commute. When I take a 10 car Pittsburg train from the city to 12th St to transfer to "A CROWDED THREE CAR RICHMOND TRAIN". During commute it is 6 cars. They cut it to 3 cars midday. I think a train should never be less than 6, PERIOD! It really degenerated to a new level of stupidity when they still shortened the trains on "BLOODY SPARE THE AIR DAY!"
What can I say? This system was designed by geniuses but run by IDIOTS.
California State PUC requires
California State PUC requires that at least three cars be run on all train systems (That's why you never see a 2 Car BART train, though it is physically possible and has been done in the past.). I think they should increase that to at least 5 cars. The requirement was made twenty years ago and it was outdated. Let's see, increased population combined with high gas prices equals more riders which means more cars, let's make trains longer! What, too logical for the government? Probably.
