BART noise compared to other countries' rapid transit

Am visiting a friend in Albany and the BART noise is very bad. I grew up in Europe and I do not remember the rapid transit trains there ever being this noisy. What is it that BART is doing wrong?

Rail conditions, location of

Rail conditions, location of aerial trackways with a hilly backdrop and some curves between MacArthur-Ashby and the north Berkeley portal makes for perfect noisy conditions. I have been deep into Tilden Park and at times as far east as Inspiration Point and can hear the BART train(s) under the right atmospheric conditions.

Most of the inter-city rail service I've ridden in Europe (England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland) are at-grade heavy rail services. Placing something similar on an exposed aerial would probably duplicate conditions.

Don't discount the solid

Don't discount the solid axles on the wide gauge tracks. Those extra 9.5 inches mean that for a turn of the same radius, the difference in speed between the inside and outside wheels of the BART car will be substantially greater than that of a subway, light rail, or heavy rail train. This means there's going to be more screeching and track damage as the wheels slip in the turn.

Personally I can live with

Personally I can live with the noise, if its reliability gets better. Almost every other day something or the other breaks down and trains are late during peak times.

Ear plugs, the simple and

Ear plugs, the simple and inexpensive way to help remedy the problem yourself if BART won't listen. Noise is the least of my worries when I am on the train.

but bart should at least have

but bart should at least have signs, that warn the public of the noise!

it is bad enough to not provide protection, but to not alert the public to the danger???
it seems like a criminal act!

If some smart lawyer is reading these posts, pretty soon we will see a class action suit filed against BART. :)

The pricey noise cancelling

The pricey noise cancelling headphones really work. I barely hear any train noise at all.

Yeah, I use a pair of Sure

Yeah, I use a pair of Sure E2C headphones and they do a pretty good job.
It's not perfect, but it's good enough that the few times I forget them I'm always startled at how damn noisy the train is in the tube.

i use etymotic er6i

i use etymotic er6i headphones. i got them for about $70 and they are honestly the best $70 i have ever spent. i hear almost zero train noise and absolutely none of the annoying cell phone conversations, kids trying to collect money for their "youth basketball program," etc. i can listen to my music at a low volume so i don't hurt my ears or annoy others, and they have great sound quality too.

i agree with you that when i forget them the train sounds extremely loud.

The shorter list would be what are they doing right.

the trains run, and only bart employees get accidentally killed by them.
