Delays continue to vex BART

Riders heading in and out of S.F. and to and from Peninsula still facing 20-minute waits.

BART riders heading in and out of San Francisco and to and from the Peninsula continue to face 20-minute delays because of electrical power problems between Daly City and 24th Street Mission stations.
The delays began during the morning commute - shortly after 9 a.m. - but are continuing into the early afternoon.
BART is turning around some trains at the 24th Street Mission station to limit the flow of trains through the affected area, said spokesman Linton Johnson. Repair crews are working on the problem, and hope to resolve it before the evening commute.

Around 5:30 pm, the sequence
Around 5:30 pm, the sequence of trains at Civic center was,
Richmond
Pittsburg Baypoint
Pittsburg Baypoint
Pittsburg Baypoint
Richmond
All this in 5 mins. The next Dublin train was 10 mins and Fremont 18 mins.
How can BART be so stupid to send back to back Pittsburg Baypoint trains, the 3rd one was almost empty.
Probably that's the order
Probably that's the order they came out of the jam. There were two Richmond trains running parallel right before that. The extra trains can't just disappear in the middle of a run.
One of the trains could have
One of the trains could have been diverted to Dublin or Fremont, or is it too much to ask? Infact one of them could have disappeared at 24th st or before that. BART does this all the time, when there is a problem, trains are turned around at montgomery, 24th st etc.
Too much to ask. At the end
Too much to ask. At the end of the day you end with trains in the wrong places.
All trains belong to BART,
All trains belong to BART, right? Why is there so much rigidity? Even if a train has to be diverted on a particular trip, can't it be brought back to its original line in the next trip?
How. Please tell us o' wise
How. Please tell us o' wise one.
Because if there was a easy way to do that, I think it would have been figured out and implemented by now.
"Wise one" I am flattered.
"Wise one" I am flattered. Thanks.
If a DalyCity/Richmond train were to be diverted to Fremont,
1) This train either goes to Richmond directly from Fremont.
or
2) This train makes a return trip to Daly city and becomes a Daly city/Richmond train
If a DalyCity/Pittsburg train were to be diverted to Fremont,
1) This train makes a return trip to Daly city and becomes a Daly city/Pittsburg train
Something similar could be done if the trains were to be diverted to a different line.
You still end up with an
You still end up with an extra train thrown in to the schedule, which is what the earlier post was complaining about. Plus, unless you get really lucky in how the schedule works out, one or more of those extra trains are at the wrong place at the end of the day which eventually costs money to shuttle it back to where it needs to be or screws up tomorrow's schedule also.
People have been studying ways to optimize train scheduling and routing for almost 200 years; I think that it is unlikely that bartrage.com community has discovered a brand new trick that no one has thought of before.
Thanks. So basically you are
Thanks. So basically you are saying that all the best brains available are working at bart and no one outside of bart could have better ideas. for your information, one of the suggestions I had made to BART roughly 6 yrs back, was implemented last year. At that time, somebody from Bart had sent me a one liner answer saying, it can't be done. Can you guess what it was? It was a very very simple suggestion and I am not saying that nobody else could have thought of it.
No, I'm saying that it is
No, I'm saying that it is unlikely that anyone will come up with some magic railway scheduling trick that hasn't been tried in the last 200 years that we have been doing railroad engineering.
I beg to differ. Airlines
I beg to differ. Airlines have made major improvements to scheduling in the past couple of decades to improve their efficiency. Just because we have been doing things in a certain way for so many years, doesn't mean it can't be improved.
I had suggested to BART to display information of multiple trains to same destination a few years back. This I felt was important because passengers used to get into crowded trains without knowing that another train to their destination was a few mins behind. I got a curt one line reply saying "Displays are programmed to show one train per destination". A few years later, they did it.
Excellent point. There is
Excellent point.
There is ALWAYS room for improvement in any system.
Airlines have only been
Airlines have only been flying for a little longer than a couple of decades, and scheduling airplanes is nothing like scheduling trains. How many advances in the field of train scheduling (aside from improvements in technology) have happened in the last 50 years?
just because bart does not
just because bart does not think of how to do it, does not mean it can not be done
lets face it the best and the brightest do not work at bart you have said so yourself...
A second day of delays, on a
A second day of delays, on a Friday when people have worked a full week and just want to get home. Are delays two days in a row after the passage of a bad contract a coincidence or some kind of retaliation against the riders?
Definitely the result of a
Definitely the result of a far-reaching conspiracy.
You must be kidding right.
You must be kidding right. Maybe the weather has something to do with it? But what do I know.
Let's see. Management just
Let's see. Management just raised fares on the public citing a financial crisis. And a few weeks later discovers an error in estimation on a project and now has 113 million surplus dollars.
You're totally ignorant to the fact that management just totally fooled, and screwed the public, but you think delays may be intentionally caused by union employees.
Typical sheep. lol
link please. what is this
link please.
what is this surplus you speak of for?
There's a joke between me and
There's a joke between me and my walk to BART buddies that I don't walk fast enough because my train comes every five minutes anyway. 3 out of 4 times I'll beat one or both of them off the platform, and it has nothing to do with planning. That's just the way the PBP train is
Also, my train almost went out of service because some idiot jammed the doors open somewhere along the way. The operator was begging us to call her if we could see a door that was sticking. I have no idea if anyone did, or if it was just a jammed sensor.
most of the time i find that
most of the time i find that it is a sensor and not something stuck in the door...
many times, i have been on a train and in the car the alert would sound to tell that something was in the doors to keep them from closing, but all doors would be closed with nothing in them
There is a series of switches
There is a series of switches inside the door panel. If the last one is out of adjustment and doesn't make, you will get a DOA (Door Open Annunciation). There is also a proximity switch inside each door panel which sometimes fails. It's all about safety. There are double and triple items in place to make sure the doors don't open on accident.
Sorry, but "stupid" is not a
Sorry, but "stupid" is not a good description. The reason for no Fremont or Dublin trains be because those are being turned back at 24th St or Montgomery. Trains from Bay Point are a priority to the airport and if possible Richmond trains will continue to Millbrae and there could even be a shuttle train between Millbrae and SFO depending on bad the delays are. So I would have suggested hoping on the next available train and try to get to 12th St. Just a possibility.
