Why BART Doesn't Run 24HR Service
For starters, the weekend that BART ran overnight service (Oct 15-16) was a bust. In those two nights, BART only carried about 9200 passengers, that created 25,300 dollars in revenue. It cost BART about 200,000 dollars to run the overnight service that weekend. Do the math there. So basically, it's not worth running 24Hr service because there obviously isn't enough demand for it, evidenced by that weekend.
Secondly, BART service usually ends at midnight and resumes at 6 a.m. on Saturdays and at 8 a.m. on Sundays so employees can perform critical maintenance work. All the work that keeps the system running relatively smooth during the day is done at night, and can only be performed while the system is shut down. Just because trains stop running for a few hours doesn't mean that work stops. BART is a 24hr a day operation.

Bart could be 24/7. The
Bart could be 24/7. The excuse given here doesn't make sense.
Bart can single track.
Run three trains, the east bay track, the dublin track and the transbay track passing each station every 30-45 minutes or so.
The maintenence can be run around those scheduals.
Bart chooses to be stingy. While it still could be a revenue loss, this government and Bart is doing a disservice to our people, the environment and the people who would depend on such a service, but can't.
BART, you are in the people moving business. Start to act like it.
Well since the "excuse" that
Well since the "excuse" that I gave isn't good enough, I'll give you another.
When we tried to run 24hr service the weekend of the bay bridge closure, it was a complete mess. It was basically a puke and pissfest on all the trains. I swept my train at the end of my run, and on a three car train, I had 4 pools of puke, and someone that thought it would be cool to piss in the area between the cars. NTM the USED syringes, USED tampons, and USED condoms I saw on the floor that night/morning.
That's another reason BART won't run 24hr service. People have no common courtesy, don't know how to act, and totally trash trains at night. Combine that factor with the huge revenue losses, and 24hr service is wayyyyy more trouble than it's worth.
I agree. most late nighters
I agree. most late nighters do not respect BART enough or anyone for that matter
As a agent, I worked the
As a agent, I worked the grave yard shift, and most of the riders that night were between 17 and 32 and totally disrespectful to BART property. I would suspect about 75% would fail the sobriety test, the bathrooms were full of barf, and the stairwells had human excretment. 24 hour service would only encourage those that can't handle their drink to drink even more! Less than 10% took BART to or from work, a vast majority were just partiers. I encountered a lot of misinformed riders who thought that all the stations were opened, when in reality only about half of the busier stations remain opened all night/morning. Lots of pissed off people who couldn't return to their station of orgin. Caltrans funded the late night service, I wouldn't believe BART could afford to run trains 24/7 even if it wanted to.
Well, that's 9200 people who
Well, that's 9200 people who probably had no other way of getting around during those hours. Of course I understand the economic aspect of the situation but perhaps some of the extra revenue from rush hour could offset the lost revenue during late night service. In my mind BART is ideally not just a business but a community service, like the police.
Seriously. These are people
Seriously. These are people who are otherwise driving on our freeways! Would you rather they puke on the Bart or in their car where they can cause an accident? And all you need to do is add FOUR trains - two on Friday night and two on Saturday to make sure that these people get home safely and stay off our roads. I don't think that's too much to ask. You only have to trainloads of extras per night to deal with and you still have plenty of overnight hours for maintenance. Bart could make a huge difference and chooses not to.
You know by saying all that
You know by saying all that nothing is going to happen right? lol.

It's just not feasible. I've seen this issue raised again and again on this forum but I guess you'll never understand until you've policed during all-night service. Very busy. Many 5150s, DDC, even some public nudity. And so much more. But with all the factors Operator9 and an anon poster mentioned, as well as my own experiences... it's just not gonna happen.
Sorry folks.
If you REALLY want it... write your BART board.
I hate those damn 5150s,
I hate those damn 5150s, always gettin into mischeif. I can deal with the DDCs though.
On a side note I don't know what that means.
Come on, think about it.
Come on, think about it. How do you think they got home once they got back to the BART Station in the east bay? IN THEIR CAR THEY LEFT IN THE PARKING LOT! Keep them off the road, give me a break. They need to keep themselves under control.
Very well put. Thank you.
