Massive delay @ Civic Center

Master Chief's picture

Inbound train has been sitting at the platform with the doors open for like 10 minutes... They're making anouncements over the intercom, but it's too garbled to hear...

Outbound trains are super delayed too... And apparently no inbound trains are going past 24th Street... Anybody know what's going on?

bart has a *really* vague

bart has a *really* vague service advisory, suggesting a 30 minute delay in both directions

511 usually has more

511 usually has more information than BART but it comes later. i guess a train was "disabled" which meant no trains between 24th and millbrae for awhile. was it all crowded?

It wasn't as bad as I had

It wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be, considering that we were at the tail end of Rush Hour.
When the trains finally started flowing again it was SRO and we were packed in like sardines, but we didn't leave anyone behind.

The biggest problem was that after the first two trains heading East, the boards said the next train wouldn't come for another 24 minutes, so anybody who wasn't able to make it on that first train was going to be stuck there for quite a while.

I'm pro-BART, but whoever

I'm pro-BART, but whoever designed the system initially really should be strung up for only double-tracking instead of triple or quad tracking. The current setup means a single disabled train sends the entire system into chaos.

What surprises me is that

What surprises me is that they don't single track in situations like this. Yes, it would slow things down significantly, but it would also keep something moving. Even worse is that while BART's got a big hard on for a $500 million Oakland airport connector(!), that $500 million could buy a 30th and Mission station that would provide extra tracks (for storing or bypassing disabled trains).

That is like saying Highway 4

That is like saying Highway 4 should have been 4 lanes when it was first built. It would not have been a fiscally smart decision when the system was initially designed. Although it would have been great to have 3 tracks minimum everywhere in the system with interlockings between every station, but that was not the case.

And some wonder why we need train operators. Who would troubleshoot a train that cannot move? Wanna talk about MAJOR delays...no operators. LOL. Even though a single disabled train can send the system into a downward spiral, it can be back on time relatively quickly.

Not at all. That's like

Not at all. That's like saying in retrospect that Hwy 4 should have a shoulder if Hwy 4 were built without one. Extra lanes aren't just for revenue service, but to allow you to bypass disabled vehicles. Only someone exceedingly ignorant and arrogant (which BART execs were and often still are) would believe that BART cars are so perfect to the extent that they'll never break down.

Zing!

I was one of the hundred or

I was one of the hundred or so people trapped in a broken BART train between Balboa Park and Daly City. Took just about an hour for a rescue train to get around to rescuing us all. If the train had burst into flame we would have been goners.

Loved the way that the driver waited thirty or forty minutes to tell us that there was one car that still had electricty and air circulating. He told us we could move to that car if we chose. Those of us who enjoy breathing did just that.

If the train had burst into

If the train had burst into flames there would have been a different set of procedures since it would have been a safety issue.

I doubt he waited 30-40 minutes after he found out. Maybe you think the operators know when a car is hot or cold. The TO's appreciate when riders inform them of hot or cold cars.. Use the intercom, so he can tell others.

You have a negative tone to your post, maybe BART is not your best choice in transportation.

You know there are levers and

You know there are levers and things you can use to open the doors, right?

If the train had burst into flames and you were too stupid to read the instructions and figure out how to get the doors open then you probably deserved to die.

Darwinism.. Strongest

Darwinism.. Strongest survive.. Can't tell you how many times I have boarded a train and everyone is sitting there fanning away. Must be over 120 sometimes. And the next car is actually chilly..

I sit there watching the fanning through the glass in my nice cool coach. I am not going to let those people know what should be obvious, besides they may follow and heat my car up.
