Another Window into how BART works bransonranch.blogspot.com

bransonranch.blogspot.com

Not sure if this link works but, another window into the workings of BART. I believe with BART more info comes to light via the unions.

"First of all there are 125

"First of all there are 125 fewer people working on the cars now than there were 10 years ago but the system has grown and continues to grow."

I hate how people say this as though it's proof that BART employees are overworked, because it ignores the fact that most workers are much, much more efficient today than they were 10 years ago, thanks to better computers, more power tools, etc etc etc. It even ignores the fact that part of this is because BART employees regularly abuse their overtime in order to DOUBLE their pay.

Sure, BART could definitely hire more employees, but just because there are fewer employees doesn't mean that the work is harder or that there aren't enough people to get things done.

Also, this lady seems to be living the high life on her husband's BART wages. Big new motorcycle, living somewhere where they can have (and feed!) all kinds of crazy-ass exotic pets, own horses, and all kinds of other stuff. I guess her husband works in "Quality Assurance" for BART. I wonder what that means, and what he gets paid?

Looks like QA work starts at

Looks like QA work starts at $68k and averages around $96k.

Her husband, Daryl G. Branson made $125,426.67 last year.
$34,229.34 of which was overtime.

Sounds like the Bransons are complaining all the way to the bank!

"A holiday, unless it falls

"A holiday, unless it falls on your day off, is a regular work day. So most shop employees do not get holidays off."

Neither do cops, doctors and firefighter. Image that your house catches fire on Christmas because of a faulty light on the tree.... all the fire stations are closed because fire fighters need the time off. Someone steals your car on Easter Sunday, but there are no cops because they're office. You choke on a bone at Thanksgiving, but the ERs are closed because the docotrs need time off. Stop complaining. It's a job, not Club Med.

Yeah, for $125k + insanely

Yeah, for $125k + insanely good benefits and free use of the BART system for myself and my family, I think I could deal with having to work on Hanuka or Easter.

Amen to that.

Amen to that.

Add the generous benefits to

Add the generous benefits to the 125K and you get a sneak preview of the lowly income. Though I love the job i am doing, i work my ass off for 1/2 this income. If the Unions do come out stronger this year, i might change my mind about working for bart. with such generous benefits and work rules, i will happily forgo the holidays for all those wonderful non-holidays in a year.

I guess we are too efficient

I guess we are too efficient right now, because the management want us to take our personal tools home so we can share a tool box instead. As for computers, we have only 2 in the shop that we share. If one computer go down, we just have to wait. I have ask for more computers before and I am still waiting. I guess thats the only way they can slow us down. Four years from now they will say "what is a mechanic with out tools". This is the kind of rule they will try to pin it to the Union in four year, and the public will believe the BART management. They want to get rid of the old work rule so they can make new ones like this. I am ready to abuse the overtime when they offer it. (Management have to approve it first)

Wow. I guess "writing skills"

Wow.
I guess "writing skills" isn't on the list of requirements for BART mechanics.

So what flavor Haterade are

So what flavor Haterade are you drinking today master chief? lol

Master Chief's picture

I guess the flavor that

I guess the flavor that thinks that there is a problem when one's writing skills are so poor that they create an impediment to understanding.

Not to mention that complaining about using shop tools instead of being forced to buy your own seems kind of stupid.

He's probably half-right about the computers though. I'm sure they're better than the ones that were being used by BART a decade ago, but management everywhere is notorious for trying to force workers to use inadequate computing technology.

The laptop I use is more than 10 years old, running Windows 98.

Time to upgrade!

But the systems on the BART

But the systems on the BART trains are all RS232 Serial connections, which isn't available on new laptops, and some of the software will only run in 16bit windows, and some in DOS only.

Master Chief's picture

I'm surprised they can't get

I'm surprised they can't get custom laptops made, and that they can't find someone to program an updated version of the software, or at least an interface so that the old software could be used on newer machines.

I suppose the real issue is that if someone DID program new software it would have to go through a ridiculously long testing process before it could be approved.

Few years back one computer

Few years back one computer was still being used that was running Windows 3.11.. But needed DOS for the software.

The "new" ticket machines were running on windows NT.. I think I saw one recently on win 2K.
