Are BART officers not allowed to sit in the seats?

Please, please I'm not interested in rants or spews of outrage. I've just noticed that officers do not sit when they are riding from station to station (either when walking down the aisles or just traveling to wherever) even if there are plenty of seats. Is this standard procedure? Or do I just never see this?

Good question.
I wonder if it's so that they are less susceptible to attack from irate/stupid passengers?

I like BART Police, and wish there were more of them monitoring behavior on the late-night trains.

I can think of a few reasons they wouldn't sit

- they'd be taking seats of paying customers
- their equipment is bulky and might snag on the arms or rails if they had to go do something in a hurry
- their reaction time would be slowed for an emergency
- they would be more vulnerable to attack from behind them as opposed to standing near the door where they can see everything
- it would look like they were slacking off
- they see all the disgusting things and people in the seats and wouldn't sit there anyway

HAHAHA to the last one. They

HAHAHA to the last one. They probably see what actually lands on those seats and know better.

I think TreoBART covered just about everything on my list. Although I have sat down in late night train cars that are empty.
