Why not sell advertisment space on the side of trains?
In this time of economic chaos, what does Bart want to do? Raise fairs, increase parking and cut back on trains available for the paying public! The answer is clearly in front of you, but the general manager chooses in her own words "Not on my watch". When it was suggested to her "Why don't we sell advertisement space on the side of the trains to help with the budget" She said that in her opinion that would not look ascetically pleasing. Yet if you look at the trains that are wrapped with " Spare the Air " advertisement during certain times of the year, you would notice that they look much better than the aging aluminum trains. But let's remember ,that is not the question. The question is how do we continue to support the public's need for transit without raising fairs and parking? Bart recently spent millions of tax dollars on a new car wash at the concord maintenance yard which would not have been necessarily had the wrapped the cars with advertisements. Not only would the car wash cost had been saved, but a considerable amount of money would have been raised from the sale of space. There are currently about 635 trains in the system as we speak. How much does a 75 foot billboard rent for per month? Try goggling that question. Keep in mind that there are two sides to each 75 foot car. Do the math and wonder " Is her opinion worth the cost?.

One of the attorneys at work
One of the attorneys at work asked me this very exact question only he said there was plenty of room for more advertising in all of the stations.
I think trying to save car wash money is a little lame because the trains still have to be washed but the thought of advertising is a good one. I'd rather see the trains covered with advertising than my T.O.s losing their benefits and getting no raise or a crappy raise when BART management gets their 7% and 8%.
You DOOOOOOOOO notice THAT NO ONE FROM BART MANAGEMENT or the BART's lame ass Board comes on here and disputes BART Management's 7% to 8% raises! BART management deserves to be penalized for mismnaging BART funds BIG TIME!
I WILL BE CAMPAIGNING WITH A FUCKING HARD ON TO GET RID OF BART'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND MANAGERS IN THE NEXT ELECTION.
IT'S UP TO US TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT BART MANAGEMENT AND IF THEY THINK I'M GOING TO FORGET ABOUT THEM, THEY'VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMING. I'M JUST GETTING STARTED.
I'm wondering if this does
I'm wondering if this does happen who will take their jobs? Do we need to have an election to replace the board members? What's going to happen to Linton? Who in their right mind wants these jobs? Do we have to recruit people? Do we put ads in Craigslist?
Ok, enough of this greed!
Ok, enough of this greed! T/O's (train operators) and Bart employess has the same Job that I do everyday working for a charter company driving MCI's or Prevost Coaches but I make much LESS than they do. I put myself into danger everyday having to maneuver a 45ft vehicle down the the highway ditching and dodging insane motorist with crappy benifets and NO such thing as OVERTIME PAY RIDICULOUS!! I'm subject to many diseases first hand and T/O's are shielded from the public in the private Cab pressing BUTTONS ALl Day or Yard Work.... How Dare YOU. I'm MORE Likely to die first from a Bus Accident then a Computerized Head on Train CRASH, GET REAL! I know many train Operators that brag alot about how much money they make DOING NOTHING! I think TRAIN OPERATORS ARE WELL OVERPAID LET THEM GO ON STRIKE AND EMPLOY PEOPLE THAT WILL APPRECIATE THE WAGES THEIR MAKING NOW............ I'M PRETTY SURE YOU WILL FIND ALOT OF WILLING APPLICANTS THAT WOULD APPLY FOR YOUR POSTION!
During the years when the
During the years when the ridership was at the highest, BART made good profit, where did the surplus money go? Did the BART management/board/employees get hefty raises and bonuses? Why is this Govt agency working like a private company? if they have surplus money this year, should it not be used for next year, instead of wasting it? Now during these bad times, they raise fares and cut services. I fail to understand the explanation that Linton Johnson gave, while raising the fares to SFO airport by $2.50. He says, its still cheaper to take bart and any other form of transport. Public transit fares should not be based relative to the costs of other types of transportation. Public should be encouraged to take public transit, because its cheap and efficient. Revamping the whole BART structure is whats required.
That's a good question. It
That's a good question. It didn't go to the employees. We get 0 and 2 percent raises regardless of how well BART does.
If you really want to assert
If you really want to assert your independence, (ie BART) you would institute a drinking car on each of the 9 or 10 car trains. coffee and snacks in the AM, booze in the PM. No outside admittance, you would have to enter from the previous car(1 Bart Police Officer would then be stationed there, id check etc) you then have no seats, just a bartender making the simplest drinks and selling some snacks. you would have to eat/drink anything purchased in that car. using the spray on floor you would then be able to hose it down nightly. (this should be what they do with all of the cars)
you want to talk about not leaving $ on the table, the ferry's do it, why not BART? too bad the board members are thinking about non revenue producing things ie cell phone ticket. I would think that if I was paying somebody over $200k per year I would expect some ideas flowing from them, or a system that ran a touch smoother.
lol... What? Hahaha.

Advertising is most effective
Advertising is most effective in places where people are stuck waiting around and staring at it. The side of the trains may be the least-stared-at open space that BART owns. Buses get ads on them because they move slowly and stop in traffic. BART trains are either underground and invisible or above ground and moving fast most of the time.
Correct. Not to mention that
Correct.
Not to mention that BART ads are pretty useless and have a low rate of sales/interest generated.
Ad dollars spent on BART could be used on billboards or TV spots that would generate far more return on investment.
