BART Budget shortfall I have the solition

Instead of raising faires by 10% and parking fees also. How about BART extends its service. If not 24 hours a day atleast until 2am.

This way more people could take BART into the City, party it up and get home safely. They could even skip some stops to make it faster.

What are peoples thoughts on this. It is a shame that it ends at midnight.

Actually, that would add to

Actually, that would add to the shortfall.

More miles on the cars means more maintenance. also more station agents, train operators, what have you. Management has pissed away the money and let the place fall to pieces. Spent all their money on useless consultants because Management doesn't know how to do anything on their own.

Maybe we should contract out Management. Have a General Manager and Asst. GM in India that can tell them what to do by phone or email and we could pay them about 35,000 per year.

I personally think the state should step in, kick out the Board of Directors and the first 3 layers of upper management and make it a state operation. All employees would become state employees. No strikes......

It would be another cash cow for the state just like all the bridges.

I like your idea about the

I like your idea about the state stepping in. BART management is 100% incompetent and they need to ALL go.

Every time BART has run a

Every time BART has run a late night or 24 hour schedule they did not see the ridership they wanted. The reason for this is that every time BART rand an extended schedule it was for a short time only thus not that many people were willing to change their ways.

I for on would not take a swing shift job that relied on BART if I knew that service was going to go away in a a few weeks. And if I had such a job I would not give up my car for short term service.

Let alone leave your car

Let alone leave your car overnight at most stations...

I'm pretty sure I read (the

I'm pretty sure I read (the last time that the Bay Bridge was closed) that Caltrans was footing the bill to have BART run all night. I don't know if this makes a difference.

There is virtually no transit

There is virtually no transit system in the nation comes close to turning a profit. BART would probably lose less money if they actually didn't run service at all. That's what happened with LA Metro during their contract impasse with the drivers union about 5 years ago, as the strike lasted over a month.

But because public transit is an essential public service, we subsidize it. But... with just the bare minimum to operate it. Since Sac cut STA funding (which is a big chunk of every transit agency's budget) for the next 4 years, it's going to be bad unless the State shapes up or the Feds help out. So far, it seems like the Feds are primarily concerned with infrastructure projects... which is a completely different part of the budget than operating expenses.

BART tows the flat broke line

BART tows the flat broke line all the time Janitorial cuts, service hikes, etc. In 4 years, the cost to travel from PTS/BP to downtown SF has risen 60 cents (from 5.00 to 5.60) -- about 17%. Then I hear about 25 million+ going into a crossover track in Walnut Creek because pansy-ass Pleasant Hill riders (no offense to any of them on this website) always complain about not getting a seat. And the Warm Springs extension. And money to do environmentals for BART to San Jose because everyone in Orinda wants to goto the Eastridge Mall. Meanwhile I sit in highway 4 traffic everyday. I'll croak before (e)BART comes to East County, or BART goes to Livermore, or Palo Alto or anywhere else it was once destined to go... this I'm sure. I'm 28.

Long time fans/employees can answer this for me:

Didn't SamTrans pay in like 600 million to the BART system in the early 90s for San Mateo county to get BART (ala SFO extension) and BART management turned around to fund the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Dublin/Pleasanton extensions with it?

Is this crossover track in

Is this crossover track in the works now, or is it already there? When I used to enter at Pleasant Hill, I ALWAYS had a seat. The Montgomery train originated in Concord, and even the SFO train seemed to have space at that point. It was the people in Walnut Creek that ended up taking up the rest of the space and making it standing room only.

... it was a little more dicey on the way home, but that's just the way downtown SF is.

In the works

In the works now.

When they closed the Bay

When they closed the Bay Bridge a few years back I happened to glance at the 24-hour service schedule BART was running. The schedule suggested it did NOT stop at certain stops after midnight. I want to ride it this Labor Day weekend when they shut the bridge down again just to see how fast it is getting from PTS/BP to the city. I'll s long for express service forever after, too (I'm sure)

Ridership after midnight

Ridership after midnight would not have any positive impact on the budget, in fact it would have a negative impact. As reported in prior posts, BART utilizes the closure time for essential maintenance. Track related maintenance such as grinding, switch replacement, communications and train control work must be done during the closure window.

skeletal single tracked

skeletal single tracked service could be done overnight while repaors are done--other subways manage to do so. As to costs, transit is not, nor should it be a profit center. Like fire, police, sanitation, it is a task of civilised government.
