Anyone else been harassed by the panhandler at the top of the escalator in front of Fidelity at Montgomery Station?
This guy has been bothering me for at least three months. The more I ignore, the meaner he is getting.
I won't give him any money because he's perfectly healthy enough to work and he gets meaner every time. I just try to get by him and pretend he's not talking to me and go on about my business. Tonight, he tells me: "Fuck you bitch, next time you walk in front of my face I'm going to hurt you."
The guy is about 6 feet 2", thin, seems like middle eastern dissent, black oily, wavy hair, short but wavy on top, parted on the side, mean brown eyes, aggressive and pushy. Usually seems to wear a red shirt and jeans. Sometimes he has a cap on.
Sometimes when I see him, I'll walk across the street to avoid him and go down the One Post Street side but seeing that rat trap by the escalator over there creeps me out too but I guess after tonight, maybe I should just go down that side.
This creep is right at the top of the escalator at Montgomery, on Market, in front of FIdelity, interfering with patrons trying to get on the escalator and enter Montgomery BART. He's there SEVERAL times a week selling his Street Sheet and wanting money. I see him between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.
I wish BART would get rid of him. I couldn't find anyone at Montgomery to report this to tonight and every time I see him, I just cringe. I had a nice today until I saw him.

I believe his name is Jeremy.
I believe his name is Jeremy. Curly hair, caucasian, dark skinned. I usually avoid his wrath by giving him a half wave as I paas him and say something like "HEY Jeremy". He looks at me with puzzzled look and then moves onto his next victim.
Panhandlers in Portland
Panhandlers in Portland
We have our fair share of them up here in Moscow on the Willamette too. They bother me almost everyday standing outside of McDonalds with their hands out. They are are in good shape, smoking cigs and drinking soda. Sam our new Mayor won't do anything about them because he's a super lib along with most people in charge here.

I talk to people alot.. It is economics.. One guy told me he makes $20-30 an hour and is only out there 3 days a week. The "silver" guy that is sometimes at powell and sometimes at fishermans warf said he makes about the same. Selling "street sheet" and entertaining with a can in front of them is legal.
Both said if they got a job they would have to do more work, with someone elses rules and schedules, and make less money.
The key here, don't give money. You are supporting street people (duh). I always ask "can i have some of that too.." every time i see someone give free money away.
25/hour == $50K a year tax
25/hour == $50K a year tax free.
In fact, if you think about it, you are paying his taxes for him since he does not pay someone else has to pay more..
It occurred to me that if
It occurred to me that if you place a sign (or a note) at the bottom of the stairs or escalator commenting on his hourly income and attitude I am sure his donations will plummet.
Sounds like we need a picture of this guy for the BartRage gallery.

Last night on my way home I passed a guy holding a sign claiming he was hungry and homeless. Perhaps I would have felt a twinge of guilt for not tossing him some money if he hadn't been wearing a brand new North Face jacket that I suspect is about $250.

If he's on the street outside the station, isn't that SFPD's turf? Come to think of it, where is the boundary -- at the pay gates?

He is actually at the top of the escalator which is still BART property at Montgomery Station in front of Fidelity, not on the street. He interfers with people trying to get on the escalator. It is already a narrow entrance. He isn't always selling the Street Sheet either. The only thing I've ever said to him is that "I don't have any money" which is true; I don't carry cash often any more but this guy is pissing me off so I may give the pandhandler across the street $20.00 and go hey, look asshole but why set the skitzo off. If BART PD or even a station agent was around last night, I would have reported him. Most stations agents at Montgomery are less than helpful anyway.
He looks a bit too dark to be considered caucasion but I'm no expert on races, etc., though.
I'm just going to take a different route tonight because it is a no win situation for me. He will just hassle me worse next time if he figures out he was reported, and, of course, no one will be around then either.
