Nail clipping on BART
I get bored on the train too but how in the hell is it even remotely cool to clip your nails on the fucking train? And it's not like this guy was using one of those clippers that catches the nails, his clippings were just flying in all directions. I looked at the guy and gave him my "boy you're pretty much a douchebag, huh" face but he just went about his business.
I'm glad that I travel BART during off peak hours because I think I'd lose it if I had to travel during the times most of you do.

it isn't all that bad during
it isn't all that bad during peak hours. most of the people are business commuters, and they aren't all that douchy. you might have less people on the trains during off-peak hours, but the douch ratio is much higher during those hours as well.
next time you (by you i mean everyone that reads this) see someone exhibiting douchebaggery, note whether they are dressed like a business professional or not. the only douchebag businesspersons i can think of are ms. 50-something 6-purse aisle blocker and mr. newspaper snapper.
the guy spreading his legs wide to make room for his non-existant nads? the line cutters? the owner of the full size bike during non-bike hours? headphones at 120 decibels? you name the pet-peeve. the vast majority of these people don't commute on bart for an 8-5 job.
EW. I NEVER understood that.
EW. I NEVER understood that. Do they clip their nails randomly at home and leave the cuttings everywhere? That's just gross.
I must say, Boopiejones, I
I must say, Boopiejones, I resent the implication that the majority of bad BART manners come from those who do not do the 8-5 business commute to SF.
I used to be one of those professionally-dressed commuters to Montgomery. Then the dot.com bust happened and my high-paying job disappeared. Without going into unrelated detail, I found a new career and now, in my surgical scrubs, get on a 3-car BART train (try that on for size, those of you who complain about 8- or 9-car trains) that departs my station at 6:15 A.M. Not too many downtown SF business suits at that hour, yet my train is crowded. Lot of bicycles, many different kinds of "uniforms", hushed conversations in Spanish; just us working stiffs trying to make ends meet. Nothing high-class or pretentious about those who regularly ride BART before sunrise.
But you know what? There rarely are problems - other than the fact we'd love more than 3 cars. Mostly quiet, respectful, the occasional breakfast eater who does NOT toss the wrapper or cup on the floor. I suspect most of us don't have other commute options and are very thankful BART is here to help get us to our jobs and we don't abuse it.
And, for the record, I am a 50+ Ms. backpacker and can only hope I don't swing around too quickly and accidentally bean you with my bag. I will also give up my seat for the infirmed, elderly, or pregnant women while every man in sight seems to be "asleep". And I'm talking about the business-suited men during the COMMUTE hour on my way home.
Of course in 25+ years of BART commuting I've seen a lot of ugliness, but that's not the point. I write this now for all of us who do not wear business suits, don't commute to downtown SF and still pay just as much in BART fare.
I also can't tell you how many years it's been since I used a douche bag. Do you have any idea how cleansing they can be???????????
ok, let me rephrase that.
ok, let me rephrase that. the vast majority of douchebags riding bart are not on their way to work - it doesn't matter whether they are wearing business attire or not. they could be in scrubs, a suit, a chefs uniform, whatever). work commuters (overall) are not the problem on bart. the problem people in my experience are people who are either joyriding, going to meet their drug dealer, going shopping in "the city" etc. the point of my post was that 1) there are a higher percentage of assholes during non-commute hours, and 2) most of the assholes DURING commute hours are people that are NOT on their way to work. i don't think that you can provide evidence to dispute that fact.
the only time i have seen someone doing pull-ups on the overhead handrails? non commute hours
puking on the train? non commute hours
smoking on the train? non commute hours
sleeping across an entire quad? someone dressed "gehtto" during commute hours
blasting music on the speaker of their cell? someone dressed "ghetto" during commute hours
cutting in front of a line? someone dressed "ghetto during commute hours
walking down the aisled purposely bumping into people as they go? someone dressed "ghetto" during commute hours
You're right on the front end
You're right on the front end of commuting hours that early in the morning, believe it or not. Just as an example, the no-bikes rule on PBP starts with the 6:17 train and ends with the 8:02 train (departs Pittsburg at that point).
I agree with Boopie's sentiment here that people going to work are generally not the troublemakers, though I do think it can be difficult to tell just by looking. I usually only see really blatant rule breaking (except the coffee rule of course) and general rude behavior between 10a and 3p, well outside of normal business hours.
I wonder what the stats are
I wonder what the stats are for police calls vs. time ( and compare that to police calls vs. number of current riders )
Response time under 6
Response time under 6 minutes.
