Faregates out of ink

calbarter's picture

This is a really minor rant, but I really dislike it when the fare gates are out of the ink that prints how much value you have left on your ticket. I know that the little display also tells you how much you have left, but usually there are people behind you waiting to get through the faregate preventing you from looking at the value. It's a really common problem at Embarcadero; particularly at the southwest faregates. I've exited through 3 of the 4 open faregates on 3 different days; none seem to have ink in them =/. Is the district so cash-strapped that it can't afford the ink for the faregates?

I have noticed that too. Some

I have noticed that too. Some times I have had to do Addfare because I didn't realize how much was on a ticket because there is no ink. One time it did that, I went to the Station Agent and she wrote it on the ticket. Assuming that the ink roller on the faregate costs about $2. There are 579 faregates in the bart system. So that would be $1158 + labor to replace the ink. I can see why they are not so diligent in fixing that. But I agree with you it is annoying.

$1158+ labor is a tiny drop

$1158+ labor is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to other operating costs. I think the problem here is more who is responsible for checking the ink than actually replacing it. Its kind of like when you go to a retail store and the register runs out of paper. There's plenty of paper under the counter, but the last person to use the register didn't change it when the pink stripe showed up.
