Hey all you bike haters, I may have found a solution

I take my bike on BART every time I need to take it -- one to five days a week to get to work. I work 2nd shift and commute against the rush anyway (SF to CoCo) but since I take the yellow line, there are many people with luggage and just people in general. The trains can be crowded even at 2:30 p.m., the middle of the day.

So when I bring my bike on board, I won't sit unless I get one specific seat. That is the ADA seat next to the door that has just two seats and nothing against the wall. I lean my bike against that wall near the door and then turn the wheel 90 degrees so that it rests against my legs. This isn't always comfortable for me, but it leaves the seat next to me open enough for someone not hugely obese to sit. That way I take up ONE seat.

There has been one time when the train was packed and someone with a wheelchair needed the seat. In that case I got off the train and jogged to a different car, where I had to stand. I understand that's what I have to do sometimes. But with a mile on the front end of my bike commute and three on the back end, I like to sit if I can. Plus I think this takes up even less space than trying to not lean against the doors or sitting in one of the other openish seats and blocking two or more seats with my bike.

Only problem with this is when people sit in this spot without luggage or anything, and the center of the car is empty. I'll admit that irks me a bit. But maybe you enlightened BART ragers will think of this as the best solution and throw me a bone!

I've attached my plan, it's a real work of art haha.

i totally agree with

i totally agree with everything you said. I ride bart w/ bike every time too and that's also my game plan. Honestly i don't really see anything else better than that idea. Nice artwork, lol

Oooooooookay you've got me.

Oooooooookay you've got me. As is known, I'm not a huge fan of bikers in the BART system in general. However, your plan lessens that sentiment, though just slightly.

Ugh, I'll give up the act.

It's a good plan, makes sense, and is win-win.

Damnit.

There, I said it.

wait a sec. that seat in

wait a sec. that seat in your beautiful picture is the bass seat. you can't sit there with a bike, because then people on their way to band practice have no where to sit. you should really search the site before posting such nonsense. i direct your attention to node 825: http://bartrage.com/node/825. you cannot sit in the bass seat!!!

There's a hell of a lot more

There's a hell of a lot more bikes in the system than there are people with basses. And if that seat's taken, suck it up! You have no claim to that seat! Neither do bicycles. It's designed for wheelchairs and people with disabilities. Get over it, he got the seat before you. That's how it works in public transit. I have to say that your drawings make sense and are funny, but you don't get priority just because you're carrying a bass. Sorry, but that's how things are done.

I'm pretty sure boopie was

I'm pretty sure boopie was being sarcastic, based on someone one time bringing a large musical instrument and just having it stand there on an SRO train expecting it not be inadvertently knocked over...

Oh, alright. It's sometimes hard to identify sarcasm via the internet.

Totally my game plan, except

Totally my game plan, except I don't see the need to turn the wheel. I get this option a lot in the morning, and often after Bay Fair in the PM.

I have some other tricks that minimize space if that is not available, but they won't work for everyone on all lines. From Bay Fair to Dublin, the doors on the right side of the train are not going to open. I can stick the bike in front of the doors there too. Has to be done right, but it really minimizes space use and gets it out of the way of the active doors.

Its good to see my fellow bicyclers are working to minimize impact. Keep up the good work.

My solution for today was

My solution for today was taking the Oakland Ferry.

A) they provide a area/rack for bicycles (and encourage their use)

B) it is a nice day

C) they serve beer

D) no hobos

E) they have bathrooms ( needed due to reason C listed above )

It is cheaper if you get a

It is cheaper if you get a discount booklet specially a Wageworks/Commuter check (plus with discount booklet you get a free Muni *and* AC-transit transfer with each ticket)

With the discount booklet it costs almost costs the same ( if you utilize transfers )

so, yea.... without the discount booklet they are a "little" more expensive

but boy it is worth it on a nice day....
