Spare the Air this Thursday (UGH!)

icrew's picture

Looks like the Bay Area transit agencies are getting together to make transit free this Thursday, which means we all get to deal with crowded trains, assorted undesirables, etc.

See http://www.mercurynews.com/mrroadshow/ci_9599910 for details.

Such fun!

(And, of course, Murphy's Law being what it is, I have an appointment in SF that day, meaning that not only do I have to ride BART, I also get to experience the loveliness that is the Muni 38-Geary line. Sigh.)

Maybe I'll just drive up.

Well, it's probably worth it,

Well, it's probably worth it, however, on the last few "Spare the Air" days this year, transit should have been free!

Free transit on Spare the Air

Free transit on Spare the Air days is actually a large waste of money in cost-to-remove pollution terms, as discussed at:

I don't really see the influx

I don't really see the influx of people, but then I'm not riding the train all day to notice. My heart goes out to those who feel the wrath of the stampede. May the force be with you.

darn I will be driving..

darn I will be driving.. Spare the air days make BART a busy smelly homeless shelter.

It is the quality of the ride and riders, not really the quantity.

Spare the air days is a great example of why public transit should not be free.

I thought they announced no

I thought they announced no more free rides on spare the air days? Maybe I was spaced out.

EDIT:
This is the last free one...

@mapezaid: You're correct.

@mapezaid: You're correct.

Apparently this is a promotional stunt rather than a true Spare the Air day. Real Spare the Air days are only announced the night before. Most likely, Thursday won't really be a "Spare the Air" day, just a "ride transit for free" day.

That makes this one potentially much worse, as they have many more days to publicize it, which will likely mean an even worse than normal free transit day.

I guess that means that my last day (ever) commuting on BART will be this Wednesday. We're moving to a place about a 1 mile walk from my office this Saturday, I work from home on Fridays, and with this free transit day, I'm becoming more and more convinced to drive in on Thursday. (Am I still allowed to hang out here if I'm not taking BART every day? :-) )

I'll apologize now.

I'll apologize now. Unfortunately, Thursday is my day off. :-( We typically get 2 to 3 times the calls for service on Spare the Air. Hopefully the half day free ride keeps those who can't wake up early out of the system.

2-3 times the calls for

2-3 times the calls for service, and I swear, BART police hardly ever go on code 3.... yet it seemed every other call on Spare the Air 2006 was a code 3.

The demographics change on all Bay Area transit systems on Spare the Air days. From what I've heard, AC Transit gets more commuters (I think they say 60% of AC's riders are "transit dependent"), BART gets more riders who are just there to, well, ride, and I even heard about homeless people falling asleep on ferries last year.

Jo-Jo, I'm truly jealous of you right now...
