short PB/BP night trains

bart_rider's picture

the five car train at 11:24 p.m. is too short with all the people, not to mention all the luggage. last friday night, we were packed in like sardines and then people with their luggage and backpacks wouldn't budge and continued taking up two seats. i went ahead and sat down anyway and told the guy to leave his luggage in the middle of us because I am small but a poor old 80ish gentleman who could barely walk needed to sit down the woman across the isle from me wouldn't move her giant piece of luggage and no one would move from the front section for the disabled people. they really need to run longer trains with all these people coming from the airport late at night. there was another woman down the isle doing the same thing. fridays night is always busy anyway. can't they borrow a car from the 8 car empty D/P train and add it to the 5 car so at least there are 6 cars for PB/BP? The Dublin train is empty at that time of night. at 12:10 a.m., there is a nice long PB/BP train that is pretty empty so I don't get that either. I'm almost ready to change my hours just so I can be comfortable. Last Monday night, I caught that 12:10 and I had the entire lead car to myself after Oakland.

I totally agree with you

I totally agree with you hear. I can't stand the short trains. I really don't know what the hell they are thinking but I think it's pretty obvious that BART does not do anything to be convenient for it's patrons. To be fair they do have a bottom line to worry about and cut their costs and increase ours due to many issues out of their control. But we are stuck with them and the more gas goes up, the more we will have to depend on them.

In my view, the problem is

In my view, the problem is running trains to PbBp evenings. What I experience is they are full thru 12th street fairly empty beyond Macarthur. This would indicate a need for MORE service to the East Bay west of the hills--perhaps Richmond bound trains evenings.

yes, you are right about

yes, you are right about that. many passengers do get off between 12th and Macarthur with the exception of a special event like a giants game, friday evenings, and things along that nature.

This has become a HUGE

This has become a HUGE problem, in general. So much so that San Francisco’s KRON 4 news just did a report on it, last night.

Here’s the URL for it: http://www.kron4.com/Global/story.asp?s=8223911

Notice that the problem got worse on Jan 2 -- that’s because the new “improved” schedule demands more cars for increased service. The Vehicle Shops are doing a phenomenal job attempting to keep-up with repairs but the equipment is simple not up to it. The cars die at the first sign of heat.

BART MUST order more cars to be able to maintain a proper level of service, with the increased demand. There’s just no way around it.

detail hounds will note that

detail hounds will note that in a vain attempt to reduce massive cost overruns on the SF extension, purchase of the cars NEEDED (according to the plan) to support increased passenger seat miles, was deferred based on pretending the shops would achieve increased MDBF. If the mythical ridership in the projections had actually materialised the situation would be even worse.
