exhibit A: an excerpt from an article in the Contra Costa Times (04/01/2008)
...
BART Board of Directors member Lynette Sweet approved the Peet's deal because BART will gain revenue from rent and a percentage of sales.
"I'm in favor of any alternative revenue source," she said. "We need to earn some money to go along with the fare box and sales tax or we're going to be hurting soon. Alternative revenue sources are great and we're trying to do more with our stations."
However, she is concerned about sending a mixed message.
"It's a little scary to think that cup of coffee could cost you $250," she said. "It's the wrong message to give our riders.
"Don't drink coffee on the train, but by the way, you can buy it right here."
Her solution: Adult sippy cups.
Sweet wants to lift the drinking ban for riders using BART approved spill-proof, plastic cups typically associated with toddlers.
"These new cups are real popular right now," she said. "If we can get a license for them, it would be the only cup allowed on our trains. It's like not being able to bring your own popcorn to the movie theater."
She has already asked BART staff to do some research on the sippy cup subject. "These aren't going to be throw away cups, they would be reusable," she said.

and exhibit B from today's matier and ross (Chronicle) column:
Coffee shot: If BART board member Lynette Sweet gets her way, commuters will soon get mugged on a daily basis.
Coffee mugged, that is.
Sweet, who represents parts of Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties, wants BART to waive its decades-old ban on eating and drinking on trains and in stations. That way, patrons will be able to enjoy their morning or afternoon coffee fix - provided, that is, they drink from a spill-proof cup licensed by BART.
The sole idea behind the move, said Sweet, is to allow the cash-strapped district to earn some scratch from its newly licensed Peet's Coffee kiosks soon to open outside eight - and eventually as many as 16 - BART stations.
Just last week, BART announced that its first Peet's kiosk will open April 30 at San Francisco's Embarcadero Station.
But at the same time, the district also warned that it intends to crack down on commuters caught eating and drinking on station platforms and trains - with violators facing fines as high as $250.
Sweet sees the ban as a killer for coffee sales - and BART's cut of the concession's profits as well. "There's not a good chance people are not going to stand there (outside the gates) and drink their coffee," she says.
Hence, her idea of allowing Peet's vendor - Metropolitan Coffee - to sell a $6 reusable sippy cup, emblazoned with the BART logo.
Still, BART brass is worried about the potential for coffee spills. The agency's latest survey found riders wanting cleaner trains, which is one reason BART is gearing up to spend $2.5 million to reupholster 300 train cars.
No doubt, this pot of coffee is just starting to brew.
O BARTly?
We are getting new seats?
We are getting new seats? But when? I want to sit on the slipper onces. The ones that make you fall right on your butt when you sit down. Something like my grandma Rita's couch would be nice. Oh yea and I want to put my bid in again for paisley or fucshia..

I can't wait to drink beer from my $6 reusable sippy cup, emblazoned with the BART logo.
i am going to design and
i am going to design and market a "coffee bong" with a bart logo and beat the bart sippy cups to market. my sales pitch will play off the fact that people are in the dark about the upcoming sippy cups and don't want to risk a huge fine just to get their caffene fix. "only have 30 seconds to finish that coffee before catching the train? try the bart coffee bong. 16 ounces in 1.2 seconds or less - GUARANTEED!" we'll even have celebrity endorsements - "my chai latte went down real smooth, and the best part is i didn't have to give myself a ticket" - officer shrapnel

Yes, let's allow people to
Yes, let's allow people to slop their coffee all over brand new seats so they can come here and bitch about how filthy BART is. Great idea. This is a perfect example of a problem that is created by the public but that the public would rather blame on "government" or someone wearing baggy pants, or whatever. It's funny how folks believe their coffee drinking is somehow more sacred than some baggy pants wearing black kid sucking on a soda. The nice middle class folks believe their coffee drinking is more refined and that leaving their newspapers on the train is not littering but doing the next guy a favor when in fact it is simply laziness to not take the paper and dump it in the recycling containters in all BART stations. Folks in the suburbs are just as piggish as all the people they look down their noses at.

[sarcasm]Wow... next time
[sarcasm]Wow... next time you rant could you possibly use a larger brush stroke to generalize with please?[/sarcasm]
Personally I'm from the suburbs and I don't look down my nose at others. As a matter of fact I was just about to write how assinine it was for BART to enter into this agreement with Peet's before clearing the way to bring coffee on trains. My 5 year old could have told them they weren't going to get rich off people standing around outside the station trying to gulp down their coffees in time to catch the next train.
Not all of us who come here to "bitch about how filthy BART is" even drink coffee, or any other beverage for that matter, on BART. Nor do all us "nice middle class folks" believe coffee drinking is more refined. I take it you're not middle class for I doubt you would include yourself as an offender. So are you upper or lower?
And for the record I think people who leave their papers "for the next guy" are lazy shits, too.
However, yes, I do believe it's "government's" fault for allowing such stupidity. The only thing the "public" did wrong was to spill their drink. They wouldn't have spilled their drink if it, now follow me here, wasn't allowed in the first place and was strictly enforced. Better still, let's OFFER the public beverages to take on the trains... yes, I can see how that's the public's fault.
You've suggested I drink coffee and bitch here, that I believe coffee drinking is more refined, and that I'm piggish and look down my nose at people. Way to win friends and influence people with broad generalizations!!
