There's an interesting

There's an interesting conversation going on about stuff happening to cars on BART property, or private lots used for BART, so I thought I'd post a poll. I've only had one vehicle break-in so far. My driver side window was smashed and someone tried to remove my car stereo, but that was at my apartment complex. Sadly, I am pessimistic about such things and have no doubt it will happen to me again sometime. I just hope they're as stupid as the first guy who didn't know how to remove the stereo.

There is no "U" in BART

If there were an option for

If there were an option for "I don't own a car and my bike is worth less than the time it would take to steal it," that'd be my vote!

Speaking of cars @ BART it's

Speaking of cars @ BART it's funny how I see people parking their new Mercedes S500 in the lot...

I agree, there's something

I agree, there's something odd about a MBZ G55 parked in a BART lot. That's a lot of bucks to be sitting out in the parking lot.

Cars? In a parking lot for

Cars? In a parking lot for CARS?

Wow. I gotta see me one of these.

Well would you drive a S500

Well would you drive a S500 (high-end Mercedes) to BART and take a risk of dings and dents?

Chances are that if you see

Chances are that if you see me drive up in a nice car, in all likelihood I don't have a primer brown Gremlin just to drive the few miles to BART. As far as dings and dents...if that's your chief concern then I think the more problem prone environment is a Safeway parking lot.

Nevertheless, nobody buys a new car just to garage it Monday thru Friday. I know I don't. I park in the permit lot and my car is, to date, dings and dent free.

Well true but that depends.

Well true but that depends. My buddy has a 02 Mustang GT vortech supercharged and that's garaged monday-friday or on ugly weather. It is a show car. Depends on the person you know some just may want to rack up miles on a old daily beater first. I do that for example I have a 2008 G37s coupe.

some people can afford their

some people can afford their cars, and others cannot. i used to be a valet, and it was very easy to tell the two apart. person that can afford their car tosses you the keys and a $5 and tells you to keep it under 100mph. person who can't are even more obvious. aside from not tipping well or at all, i've seen people bitch that i opened their minivan door too quickly and was going to damage the hinges. or complain that i came too close to the curb when pulling their car around (close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades).

if i made $1 million a year, my ferrari getting a door ding at safeway would be the last thing that crosses my mind. but if i made $30,000 and got a door ding in my $20,000 honda, you can bet i'd be pissed.

the other thing to consider is which is more damaging to your vehicle: 1) driving it through a tunnel, idiling in traffic at the toll booth, over a bridge, into downtown, dodging bums and idiot drivers, parking it in a lot underneath a building that has 50 spaces crammed into what is only really enough room for 25 spaces, then giving your keys to a guy that speaks broken english and moves your car 12 times for no apparent reason other than that he was bored. or 2) parking at bart and taking your chances with the door of the car next to you. i'll take door #2 any day.

I agree with you on that. If

I agree with you on that. If I do drive my car to BART glad I drive a manual 6-speed which not everyone knows how to drive. Haha.

I've seen a new SL55 AMG

I've seen a new SL55 AMG (not dealer) parked at BART as well.

When I moved from the city

When I moved from the city to the east bay and started commuting on BART, I purposefully bought a used vehicle instead of a new one for the simple fact that it would be parked at BART a majority of the time, exposed to the elements and at risk for dings and dents. However, my car, the driver's side door specifically, was recently run into, or slammed into, or in some other way completely damaged in the Castro Valley parking lot. No note was left and by the time I got to my car it was the only one left in the lane I parked in, so there was no way of knowing what a**hole caused the damage.

I kinda felt helpless in the situation - I don't exactly blame BART since accidents do happen (unfortunately it happened to me with a person that has no respect for other people's property and had no decency to leave their contact info), but there are no security cameras that could have caught what happened to my car. It might be something that needs to be implemented so people feel more comfortable and safe parking and walking through BART parking lots, or at the very least, feel like there's some action that can be taken when an unfortunate accident happens or a burglary occurs.
