Thanks for keeping the system clean...
From SF Gate:
"(03-09) 12:17 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- BART and Muni Metro service has been fully restored after riders endured lengthy delays because of a trash fire that started on the tracks near the Embarcadero station just before 9:30 a.m."
LOL, Bart let so much trash pile up on the eastbound tracks that it caught on fire and closed down Bart and Muni. Way to keep the system clean guys, you are all fired!

Thank you, litterbug riders.
Thank you, litterbug riders. It was debris from Montgomery station sucked down the tunnel by passing trains that caught fire, not trash piling up. If everyone people picked up after themselves, we'd all be better off.
And while we're talking
And while we're talking about the situation that happened in downtown SF today, let me share some important info to BART riders.
Whenever there is a situation such as the one today where there is smoke creeping into a car, get up, alert the operator and others, and move to another car. DO NOT USE THE EMERGENCY LEVER TO OPEN THE DOORS AND JUMP OFF THE TRAIN!!!!!!! That is the worst thing you can do because you turn the situation into a jailbreak, and have people running every which way. And trying to direct a bunch of panicked people is the equvialent of attempting to herd frightened cats. Not happening.
Per BART procedure, if one person evecuates, EVERYONE HAS TO EVACUATE. Wether that be in the tube, underground, or on a stretch of elevated trackway high above the streets. In a crisis situation, the operator has choices and options to deal with the situation. But once one person panics and pulls the lever, opens doors and bails, that person takes those options out of the hands of the operator and makes the decision for the entire train. Remember that.
If everyone in the affected car would just moved to another car, (it was a Bay Point train, so there were at least 8 other cars to move to) the operator could have pulled the train into Montgomery, and everyone could have offboarded safely onto the platform. Instead, somebody loses composure, opens the door, people jump off the train, now you got chaos and people running every which way in a dim, smoky tunnel underneath San Francisco. Great idea.
POST THE PROCEDURE ON THE
POST THE PROCEDURE ON THE TRAIN DUMMY AND MAKE SURE THE DAM INTERCOMS WORK FOR A CHANGE SO PEOPLE CAN HEAR WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IN THE CARS! PEOPLE DID THAT BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T BEING GIVEN ANY INSTRUCTIONS.
Only dummies and 11 year
Only dummies and 11 year olds type with the caps lock on though.
How do you know that those people on the train didn't receive instructions? Were you on that train? I'm willing to bet that instructions were given, but the people in the affected car weren't listening and/or not paying attention.
How am I so sure of this? One day trains from Richmond were turning back at 24th and Mission. I make clear announcements from Embarcadero on that the final destination of the train was 24th. The platform signs flashed 24th street. Right before the train gets to 24th, I make a clear announcement that the train will be headed back to Richmond, and will go no further than 24th. Train pulls into the platform, and I'm geting off the train, and I have a car full of people still sitting there looking at me, stuck on stupid.
If I recall correctly, those
If I recall correctly, those large yellow signs posted on EVERY car, right next to the doors, instruct passengers on how to react in the event of an emergency. And, I'm also pretty sure part of that sign instructs passengers to LISTEN FOR AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE TRAIN OPERATOR. Nowhere on that sign does it say "Open the door and risk jumping out onto the third rail, getting electricuted, and dying, MORON!"
No doubt people are
No doubt people are litterbugs and this added to the problem. However, you can't be suggesting that we are talking about 1 day's litter? This litter built up over time, probably a very long time.
Anyway, sounds like it was a very serious situation, I'm just glad nobody was seriously hurt. Fire = panic; everybody dodged a bullet.
The 'trash' that was burning
The 'trash' that was burning was wooden railroad ties, used to build a platform for a rescue vehicle. They BELONGED there, what started the fire was probably a newspaper that blew into the tunnel.
